April 2011 Newsletter

Hope this newsletter finds all our friends and fans healthy! That latest flu bug going around has attacked each band member over the past couple of weeks and we’re just now getting back to 100% healthy….and just in time! We’ve got a busy couple of weeks ahead of us!

Rhythm & Ribs is this Saturday, April 16th, and we’ll be playing from 4pm-6pm. It will also be the “City-wide” debut of the latest version of the band with Barry & Walt with Chris and Jeremy Austin on drums and vocals. We’ve been honing this combination at Oasis for the past few weeks and the crowds seem to really like the new material that we’ve started playing.

Also, THE HACKERS will be playing on Monday, April 18th (not the usual last Monday of the month) at Hurricane Patty’s from 6pm-10pm. Please make a note of that…..

THOSE GUYS are also preparing for a return to Flagler County, after a few weeks away. We’ll start at J.T.’s on the 17th, then the Black Cloud on the 22nd and McCharacter’s on the 29th & 30th. We also have dates at the New Hurricane Patty’s in Flagler Beach, stay tuned for more info on those!

We are always thrilled to see faces we haven’t seen in a while, and over the past month or two have seen Peggy & Lester from Tybee Island GA, Bob & Nancy from D.C., John & Mary Golly, Dan & Mary Kane, Levy & Missy, and Heather & Danielle. It’s always great to see our old fans come out and support the “new” band!

I hope everyone is finding the “New Updated Website” easier to navigate! You can also print out both our “Gig” and “Birthday & Anniversaries” calendars. The band would like to congratulate everyone who has a birthday or anniversary in April and all coming months!

Video from the Daytona 500 Pre-Race Show...

Thanks to Monte Dutton for his "morning adventure" video!

Wow, how great is it to have such loyal fans of all ages that continue to support us! We thank you each and every one, we are grateful and truly appreciative!

A lot of you have noticed some personnel changes in the past few weeks. Frankie Urzetta has left the band. Chris McVey has been filling in on Tue & Thu nights, and we have 2 drummers who will be playing with us in the next few weeks: Rob Piazza from the Falling Bones, and Jeremy Austin, who plays as a solo artist and with the band One Hit Wonder . All these people make wonderful music and we are having fun doing such a wide variety of music! It seems the patrons of our favorite establishments agree:

"Great time, great tunes last night . New drummer worked out great!"

"Awesome night at work,Those Guys rocked Hurricane Patty's again, damn they are badass, Tues. night, Hurricane Patty's they rock it. everyone who is sitting at home on tues evenings should get off your ass and come to Patty's to hear an amazing band!!! Seriously Damnt!! Your missing out!! I got some badass silver guitar pick earrings with "Those Guys" engraved on them, love them!!! Girls you can rock them ...i do!!!"

The “updated” website has received a lot of positive feedback. The calendar is easy to read and printable, and the new merchandise page is about to be launched. Speaking of merchandise, we’ve had such great response to our jewelry line, that we’ll soon be offering earrings, necklaces and keychains in gold as well as silver. New Tee shirts, with an updated slogan and new styles (pocket tees, baseball shirts) will follow shortly.

Our sports teams continue to compete in St. Johns and Flagler Counties. The Ladies Bowling team has remained in 1st place and Flagler PAL baseball is kicking off it’s spring season.

Our calendar is filling up quickly. We’ll be at the 2011 Daytona 500 next Sunday in a Pre-Race Concert on the Superstretch from 9am to 12:08. Hope to see all our race fans there! We’ve also confirmed the 3rd Sunday of the month at J.T.s Seafood Shack, another of our favorite places. Contracts are signed for “Music By The Sea” and we’re waiting for the contracts for “Rhythm & Ribs” Festival and “Palatka’s Blue Crab Festival”

We’ve also reconnected with our former agent/manager Rick Perry, who runs “Bounce The Cat Productions”. Rick has been a friend, fan and asset to this band since the mid 1990s, and we look forward to continuing our relationship that should bring us to new venues and events, not just in Florida, but all around the country. Rick has also posted some new videos of us, check out his YouTube page: wrix.

Till next time…..

January 19th, 2011
Jan. 6th through 9th: What a weekend! Great gigs at Oasis and Finnegan's Wake. Special guests Rob Piazza and Jack Kelly made Saturday an awesome night. Walt has known Jack since they were teenagers in Deptford, New Jersey. They played together in Wintergreen. Jack and wife Lori were celebrating their 29th anniversary in St. Augustine. Thanks to Shane & Karen for the Yamaha piano, and Best of Luck to Katie (Finnegan’s Wake's first employee and now former manager) as she leaves to pursue a career in education. Thanks to Katie, Lori & Jack for the Tastykakes!

We hope you are all enjoying the new songs that we’ve been adding EVERY WEEK! And judging by the crowd response, you have! We also have some new musicians in line to do some gigs with us; more details to follow!

The new calendar is up and running! Actually there are two, one for our gigs and one for Birthdays and Anniversaries. They are printable by request! Thanks to the girls at WebworksPro.Net for always helping out. Next up….the new merchandise page.

Speaking of new merchandise, we just got in some new THOSE GUYS keepsakes: keychains, necklaces and earrings. You can see them and buy them at the gigs or online (coming soon). There are pics on our FaceBook page now, and there will be pics on the new merchandise page on “thoseguys.com”

We’d like to thank the great crowds that have been coming to the gigs lately. Sometimes the weeks after the Holidays can be slow, but our fans are second to none!

Last but not least, we WILL be playing at this years Daytona 500 and it will be a gig that our fans can attend. Details are being worked out as this is written, but we can say it will be a pre-race concert on the Superstretch. Stay tuned for more info…..

January 6, 2011
Happy New Year everyone!

My apologies for taking so long in writing this newsletter. The Holidays seem to run together from Thanksgiving through New Years these days!

We ended 2010 on a sad note, and it seems we’re starting out 2011 the same way. We lost a few good friends in December and just got word of losing another one of our close-knit group. R.I.P. Creston Owen (12/3/10), Terry McGowan (12/15/10) and Tommy Coccia (1/4/11). You will be missed.

On a positive note, it’s hard to believe the crowd turnout recently, in what’s normally a slow time for the restaurant business! It’s great to see the fans who come to town to visit family every year, but seeing our “regulars” night after night means the world to us, and it’s the reason we get to do what we do: make good music and entertain people!

In response to some complaints regarding the website, we are aware of some of the glitches and they are being fixed as I write this. Thanks to everyone at WebWorksPro.net for always being there to help. Once the calendar issues are addressed, we’ll get the new merchandise pages up and running. We’ve got shirts, hats, key chains, picks, earrings and necklaces that you’ll be able to purchase with your credit card or PayPal very soon.

We’re going to run a special “Close Out Sale” this month on all styles Ladies Small & Medium sized shirts. Selection is limited, but you can’t beat $5 each while they last!

January Birthdays & Anniversaries:
1/1: Michael “Monk” Morro
1/4: Annette Herlihy
1/6: Aaron Almberg, Sophia Pepper
1/8: Lauren Umpenhour
1/10: Christopher McLendon

November 29

Thanksgiving has come and gone. We hope everyone had a safe and joyous Holiday!

We've had a stellar month that included new places to play and new material. We saw some old fans we hadn't seen in a long time: Duff, Bert & Mary Margaret, Danny & Mary Kane, John and Mary Golly, Jeff Metros and many others. And we need to thank all our local friends and fans for their continued support!

We got to do some gigs with special guests like Gregg Chirico and Big Jim Jenness from Mr. Natural, Wayne Johnston, Stan Adams, and had some very talented people sit in with us, like Jerry Riggs, Rob Piazza, Ron Norris, Shawn Taylor, Todd McDonald and Woody Pernell.

While we lost a couple of gigs (Shenanigans & Coles Point Tavern in VA) We've more than made up for them with bookings at Finnegan's Wake (through 2011), JT's, McCharacters, and we'll be going back to some great rooms that we haven't played in a while, both in the Oldest City and in some new cities we've never been before! Our 2011 calendar is filling up VERY FAST!

THOSE GUYS are also getting ready to make some changes in the website. You'll start to notice things like new pictures, new merchandise pages and new calendars in the next few weeks.

Our sponsorship of local sports teams continues. We've got a brand new banner at the Flagler County Recreation Complex, and our Ladies bowling team THOSE GUYS, are now in first place in the Anastasia Strikers Rec League. Way to go Ladies!

While we have been busy, we are doing our best to keep you updated in all the usual ways, including this website, Facebook, MySpace and our Hot Line for up-to-the-minute gig information: 904-471-7522. You can always post pictures to our Facebook and we'd love to see any shots you may have from the band's long and storied past.

November 8
Well another great weekend has come and gone……

We had Stan Adams from the Fortunate Son Band join us at Oasis on Thursday. Stan is a talented singer and guitarist who really does sound like John Fogarty from CCR. However Stan’s talents don’t end there, he can play lead and rhythm guitar and sing harmony. The Oasis crowd seems to like when he joins us, so we’ll be bringing him in as often as his schedule permits.

Friday night we returned to the Rod and Gun Club for the St. Augustine Rotary Annual Bar-B-Que. Although we missed last year, we’ve done this event a few times and it’s a great time and great food along with a little history lesson! St. Augustine Rotary was formed in 1927 and is the oldest Rotary organization in the Oldest City. They loved us so much, we’ve already booked 2011’s event, and the paid us twice! Well, OK the latter was an oversight, but we returned the extra money to the Rotary President, who gave us a very nice tip! Thanks to Jodi and Earl for your hospitality, and JB and his crew for the wonderful food.

Saturday was the 1st Annual Palm Coast Seafood Festival. We did a show with a very talented singer/songwriter named Shawn Taylor. Folks, remember that name. This young man writes songs that relate to everybody and after you hear them for the first time, you wonder (out loud) why this guys isn’t more famous. We enjoyed our time w/Shawn and learned not only his songs, but some new country songs that you’ll hear in our set list soon.

Shawn Taylor featuring THOSE GUYS were followed by a very talented bunch of players from Daytona “ORANGE AVENUE”. They had just returned from L.A. where they’d performed on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” and “The Morning Show”, and played the famous ROXY.

Despite the cold, we took the stage around 8pm and immediately started getting the crowd warmed up. We had Stan join us again (as well as Tracy Thommason on harp and vocals) for this gig, and we didn’t disappoint. The old saying goes, “Always leave them wanting more” and we did just that. Thanks go out to Terry Turner from Beach 92.7 and CLUB 927, The City of Palm Coast and the stage crew and vendors, who helped make this event a success.

This week we’ll have Hurricane Patty’s on Tuesday at 7pm. Thursday we’ll be joined by the great David Johnson at Oasis at 7pm, and this Friday and Saturday, we’ll return to McCharacters in Palm Coast, starting at 9pm each night. We hope to see Shawn Taylor, Tracy and maybe even Stan and a special guest or two come join us to jam at McCharacters Backstage. The food and the service is great, so come on out for a night of wonderful music.

You’ll start to notice changes to the THOSE GUYS website. We’ve updated some pictures and Heather & Theresa have promised to bring some much needed changes to our site. This will include a new “Merchandise” page with PayPal for shirts and a bunch of new stuff that we hope you’ll like.

We’re booked through 2011 at our regular venues; Oasis, Hurricane Patty’s, A1A Ale Works, Shenanigans and Coles Point Tavern (in VA). We’ll also be returning to our fav Special Events like Daytona Speedway for SpeedWeeks and Bike Week, Rhythm and Ribs (opening for JJ Mofro), The Blue Crab Festival in Palatka and Beach 92.7 events in Palm Coast (Rock ‘n Rib and Seafood Festivals). If you are planning a party or wedding please contact us through this website as soon as possible so we can include your special event.

Finally, Special Congratulations go out to Macia & Carl Pietrzak who celebrate 50 years together this Friday!

November 2, 2010

OK, our first month as the NEW Those Guys has gone well….better than I ever thought it would! I’m well overdue in putting this newsletter/update together, So first, to make a few things clear…

This is the first month of THOSE GUYS since Dave Besley decided to go out on his own; he had been a partner with Walt since 1994. Dave has been the longest “continous” member in the band that Walt & Chris formed in 1992. Here’s how it’s all (really) transpired:

Walt & Chris had met in 1983. Walt was playing the Phila/S.Jersey club scene in various bands, and just joined the “heavy metal” band STRAY DOG (formerly “Frigid Pink”) in NYC. Chris moved from Seattle WA to NJ when a mutual friend/drummer suggested Chris fill a spot in Stray Dog. (there are many humorous stories about this “meeting”; ask us sometime…. we’ll share them with you!). After Stray Dog ran it’s course…Chris & Walt had hit it off quite well and were soon performing in bands in the NJ/PA/NY area where MANY great bands and a lot of talent were……Bon Jovi, Cinderella, The Hooters, Anthrax, to name a few.

Walt had left NJ to pursue his automotive interests, and to get away from the drug/party scene that was the 1980s. After a year or two of “cultural shock” in a rural North Carolina, his dream job was offered in Florida, where it was a “no brainer” and soon after, Chris made the move south also. The auto business fizzled out, and they were asked to play Labor Day weekend at a small bar in Jacksonville Beach. In 2 days, they put together a respectable list of songs and THOSE GUYS was created!

Eventually, that list of members who have been a apart of this band is very impressive! But I’d like to take a second to thank Dave, who was instrumental in getting us (Walt & Chris) gigging in St. Augustine, and writing and recording CDs.

Where will this change take us? With the help of Barry Dunaway & Frankie Urzetta, and their vast musical talents, the level of entertainment will revert back to the higher-energy shows that helped make the original THOSE GUYS a respected name locally, regionally, nationally and world-wide.

Here are some quotes that we’ve received in our first month:

“You guys ROCKED”

“I am loving the new sound!!! So are the customers”

“That was a fun gig last nite. Great crowd too”

“I like what I hear”

Thanks to all our friends and fans for your continued support!

Hi Folks - guess who's having a birthday? No, it's not me...it's Barry. He'll be 55 years old this Tuesday. Amazing isn't it??

I know some of you are out of town--it would be great if you would send an email or call on Tuesday to wish Barry a happy 55, but for those of you who are local (and you know who you are) as usual THOSE GUYS will be playing at Hurricane Patties on Tuesday night. So by default, that is where we will be gathering to celebrate this festive occasion.

THOSE GUYS are playing 7-10pm, please stop by -- we'd love to see ya! —Lydia

Come Celebrate Barry's Birthday Tuesday night @ Hurricane Patty's! Then The World Famous Oasis on Thursday @ 7pm and The Clover Room @ Finnegan's Wake Friday Night 8pm!

Congratulations to THOSE GUYS fan and Team Owner Troy Flis, Spirit of Daytona Racing: Antonio Garcia and Buddy Rice finished third in the No. 90
Porsche/Coyote, giving the Spirit of Daytona Racing its first Daytona
Prototype podium finish.

5-8-10 Shaughnessy's Sports Grill - There was a block party going on with all the locals and this is a locals bar.  We were a little nervous but it turned out to be a great night!

5-9-10 Music for Marlee Benefit - Had a good set.  There was a guy that drove 400 miles to hear December 2003.  I wish I could have done a better version, but its the thought that counts.  Hope our efforts help our young friend Marlee.  Everyone was real nice.  Thanks Lisa for a great job doing sound.

In closing, it was a great week!  A lot of Those Guys music.  Music with my brother Ed.  Recorded in the studio.  Had dinner with friends.  Doesn't get much better than this!!!!

In closing, it was a great week.  I talked to a guy who is starting to play music and wanted my opinion.  I didn't have one at the time, but now that I think about it:  1) You have to love what you're doing.  2) Try to support the people you're playing with to the best of your ability.  3) Be a nice person (this works in any business).  Have people come see you because you love what you're doing and you're a decent person.  Don't have people just tolerate you because they want to hear the music.  4) It's a great life if'in you don't weakin.

see you down the road!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks guys.

1/22-23/10 A1A Ale Works - We had a good weekend!  Made some new friends!  Dave Johnson and Angelo stopped by.  It's always good to see our playing in other bands buddies.

1-25-10 Hurricane Patty's - A Hackers gig.  Kurt was late getting back from New York so he couldn't make the gig.  As usual, everyone stepped up to the plate and went to work.  It was a great night!  We smoked 'em!  Looking forward to next month.  Thanks to Wayne Johnston, you were a big part of a great night.  Also, would like to thank Barry and Rob Peck for stopping by.

A band is a weird animal.  It sounds best when you stop thinking about yourself and start thinking about making the music sound better.  When that happens, there's not a better feeling in the world.  Some problems are simple to fix, that's why it's so hard to figure them out.

see you down the road!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

January 18, 2010

1-15-10 Oasis - Another great night!  The place was packed.  A lot of our regulars are saying we are sounding better than ever.  What ever has happened, it's a good thing.  Lets keep it going.

I just attended a double funeral for Ann and Vickie Caudill.  I have been friends with them for over 40 years.  I lived in their house in my younger days.  They were mother and daughter and passed 5 days apart.  My heart goes out to the family (Tommy, Mike, Chuck, Don, Joey and Brad).  It was a beautiful service.

We're not on this earth for to long.  Think about the impact you are having on the people around you.  Ann and Vickie had nothing but love for everyone and they proved it by the way they lived.  God Bless them, I know he did.

see you down the road!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1-9-10 Private Party - 32° and we are set up next to a pool outside.  Sounds like a disaster, but with a couple heaters and a good attitude we had a great time!  Thanks for having us Linda.  You're the best!  Thanks Jim for sitting in!

1-4-10 Eclipse Recording Studio - What a trip!  I did one of my new song's "Love".  I had Spanky and Karen from Spanky and Our Gang singing with me.  I was sick as a dog, but what a great time I had.  Barry and Lydia had us over for a wonderful dinner.  Thanks everyone for making this a great day!

Hope everybody had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

In these lean times we should stick together and help each other.  You find out who your true friends are when times get the toughest.
