A quick reminder that we'll be recording Wednesday night's gig at the
St. Augustine Beach Pier Pavillion. The "Music By The Sea" series is a
great way to get out and meet other local music lovers of all ages. Jim
Stafford at Eclipse Systems has been recording select shows, and there
will be other CDs released, but this will be our first live CD with
percussion. Food will be provided by our favorite, the Infamous Sunset
Grille. We start at 7pm and will play straight through to 9pm. Get there
early!
Please say a prayer for our dear friend Carol Gambino, who's long
fight with Cancer has taken a turn for the worse. She's been fighting
lymphoma since 1991. Also please include her husband, Barney, and the
rest of her family in your thoughts and prayers.
Wednesday, 8/20: Another beautiful night under the stars at Creekside.
We both ate the "Palatka Plank Steak" a house specialty cooked on an oak
plank and covered in a mushroom gravy. (We recommend it highly!). We
heard some funny stories about the trip to New Orleans, but nobody was
sporting any beads! :( We saw Bill and Jane, Hoagy and Susy, George and
his family, and some more regulars including Woody and Karen, Mike and
Patty. We quit a little early, but we promise to make it up to them. We
will be taking next Wednesday off from Creekside, to play the final
"Music By The Sea" concert series at the St. Augustine Beach Pier. We'll
be playing from 7-9pm, recording the gig (we've never recorded an
acoustic set w/congas), and food will be provided by the Sunset Grille.
Thursday night at Oasis, and we were pleasantly surprised to see the
crowd build (as well as the applause) during the first set. We had a
table of lovely ladies celebrating "Girls Night Out" and Babs came in
with her daughter and grandson, Will, who's as cute as they come. We
celebrated some birthday's including staff member "George", and saw Bill
and Duff , who each brought an out-of-towner friend along, spreading the
Those Guys sound. Our great group of regulars including Hoagy & Susy,
and Tim & Sally were there, too.
Friday night at Papagallo's was a hoot. Wives (Jill & Theresa) and
girlfriend (Karen) were in attendance, but we all missed Babs, who
couldn't be there. However, lots of friends and fans, both old and new,
came out to show their support. Thanks to new fans Lynne and Mike and
Lauren and Lou, some new friends from Flagler County. We've picked up a
few gigs down there, which if you keep reading, you'll know about!
They're also listed on our calendar.
We also saw Rita & Glenn from Reston Virginia, Webmistress Heather &
Steve, Jeanie Ray & Dave, Jeanster, A/T John, Scott, Patty, and Erica.
JeffBob & Tobey also stopped by towards the end of the evening. Linda
and Marlee kept everyone's drink full, and we can't wait until the next
time we get to play there!
Saturday night we had a very rare weekend night off, and it was time
to spoil our women! So we supported the local restaurants, liquor stores
and bars, and some even managed to watch some racing and football on the
tube!
This meant we were fresh and ready for a great day at the Grille.
Although some (okay, Bert) thought we'd lost our crowd, we reminded
everyone that it was the first Sunday in months that didn't look like it
would rain any second. The crowds were there, but everyone who rode only
stopped long enough to whet their whistle and make a request, then hit
the road again! (who can blame them?) Babs came out with a big smile on
her face (see what a night off can do Dan Bob?), as well as Hoagy & Susy,
Bert Mary-Margaret and his sister Anna-Marie and brother Pete, Air Tran
John, Jeanster, Linda, Charlie, and Robin, who we hadn't seen in a
while. Tom & Judith, Patty & Mike, Mace, Joe Bedoin, Jeff & Toni and
Randy & Chris were there. Sunset Grille is always a place you can have
fun, rain or shine.
Congratulation to our dear friends Nicole and Jimmy on the birth of
their son, C.J. and more congrats to Troy from Matanzas who tied the
knot this past Saturday.
This is Labor Day weekend, and the schedule reads like this:
Wednesday, Music by the Sea at the Beach Pier at 7pm, Thursday at Oasis
at 7pm. Friday and Saturday we head up to Tybee Island GA for two nights
at the lovely Windrose Café. Sunday we'll fight traffic back down I-95
to the Sunset Grille at 4pm, and Monday, we'll be at the Dockside
Restaurant in Flagler Beach (under the Rt.100 bridge). This is a
beautiful place on the water (come by car or boat) that has great food
and we'll start playing Tuesdays here in September and October from
5-9pm.
Week of
August 10, 2003
We start out this weeks newsletter with some new stuff on the
website. There's some pics from our trip to Motorheads in Georgia, and
one of Steve with the infamous "shower doors" from the previous
newsletter. Also two new articles were published last week regarding the
band, and they've been posted on our reviews page. Be sure to check out
the nice review of "Electrified" from Rick De Yampert that ran in the
Daytona Beach News Journal. Thanks to both journalists for being so kind
to us!
A quick get well wish to Karen B., who underwent two separate
procedures this past week, and came through both with flying colors. We
love ya, Karen.
Wednesday at Creekside: We started with a great meal and soon had a
few fans on the deck to hear us. Hollywood and Tammy sat close and
requested a few of our songs. Tom & Judith stopped by to have dinner,
and when Walt wished them a "Happy Anniversary", well, they're faces
went blank. It seems they were set to celebrate their anniversary this
weekend with friends in Orlando, and truly didn't realize the actual
date was so close. I guess that'll happen after 21 happy years. Congrats
to two of our favorite and loyal fans. Then we saw Jane, Bill and Bill's
lovely daughter Kaylee, who would be headed back to Ohio after a fun in
the sun summer. It was also the eve of a fun trip planned by our
bartender Amanda and MOD Renee. They were headed to New Orleans to
celebrate Amanda's birthday and we sure wish we could join them! But to
protect their reputations, they kindly requested we stay home! Our
biggest thrill came when Gregg Chirico, bass/vocalist extraordinaire,
stopped by on a night off from his band Mr. Natural, just to hang out
with da guys! After the obligatory song, we headed out to see our
bandmate, Danny, do a gig with Greg Baril & Rusty Springfield at
Allison's, a new bar on Anastasia Blvd, that formerly was called
Options. We hit Bar None and after that the memory goes foggy!
There was only one word to describe the start of Thursday's gig at
Oasis: slow. I guess with school starting back so early and some
electrical weirdness going on up north, people were more into watching
the tube than going out; we hope they were just saving up for the
weekend! We did a new "old" song, "Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood"
by the Animals, and after getting requests for "Mr. Bojangles" and
Skynyrd, we did "Mr. B ala Sweet Home Alabama" Don't laugh, it really
worked, and Dave even threw in a little Dylan-esque vocal towards the
end. Our good friend Greg Baril came out and we tried our best to keep
him awake! He only dozed off twice! Then Danny drove him home. Get some
rest, Greg, and come back and play some! Thanks to our loyal fans, A/T
John, Tim & Sally, Dolores, Jack & Missy, and thanks to our new fans we
made that night.
Friday & Saturday at Oasis and the crowds were back to what we're
used to. Woody's daughter Melissa and her friend Bill came by and stayed
the whole night, and we saw some of our regulars including (but not
limited to) Chuck & Ann, Time & Sally, JB & Alice, Jeanster , Hope,
Duff, Old Man George, A/T John, and Mike & Laurie. We finally got smart
and brought our own bottles of Cuervo. Final savings: about $200! We
dedicated a request we got early for "The Who" to our friend Cecil. And
because of the crowd and our earlier start time, we were asked to play a
4th set both nights. Saturday night we had a young man request Fernando
and Bob Segar, and there was a young lady who sang John Prine along with
Dave. Saturday was also the welcome return of Linda, and Hoagy & Susy,
who just got back from Minnesota. Karen hobbled out to see us, and we
saw our old friend Kim who was in town from North Carolina.
Sunday was a hoot. There were so many people and so many requests. We
saw Bill Newmeyer, the Ruff's, Rich Harvey, Duff, Hoagy & Susy, Jack,
Brad, John, George and many others. We also made a few new friends who
we hope to see again. Tom & Judith made it back from their anniversary
celebration to stop by and saw hello. Afterwards, we all went separate
ways, but all managed to get home okay. (Thanks to all who offered
overnight accommodations!)
There's new pics and new reviews on the website this week. There's
also going to be a new calendar posted soon, and we'll keep the old one
around for reference. We wish Patty best
of luck in her new pursuits, and welcome Brandi to the team. As always,
Heather and her staff at
WebWorksPro.Net
continue to keep our website updated and full of information, and we
thank them for their continued support.
Also, a quick note to all who read the St. Augustine Music News; we
apologize for a slight screw-up which posted this weeks gigs last week.
This miscommunication has been corrected and will result in extreme
torture if it ever happens again! Just kidding, Lisa (Not kidding,
Walt!).
This week, August 20th through the 24th, we'll be at Creekside
Wednesday @ 6pm, Oasis Thursday at 7pm Papagallo's Friday at 9pm, OFF
Saturday, and Sunset Grille Sunday from 4-8pm.
See you at the gig!
Da Guys
Week of
August 3, 2003
Tuesday was the start of a good week,
Danny and Dave spent some time in the studio. Got some tracks started.
Stefan also helped out with some string tracks. Had a few laughs, told
some old war stories.
It was great to be back at Creekside.
Wednesday nights there have always been good. We had a great meal, then
started playing to a blue evening sky. Renee was MOD and Amanda was
bartender. Jeanster showed up first, followed by Jane, Bill and Greg,
John B. and Barb & Aaron. Greg & Lisa showed up as did Steve & Heather.
The skies turned rainy after we heard that Barb & Aaron had sold their
house and were moving away this Sunday. But even though Aaron quit his
job the second his house was sold, he still managed to get us our last
order of strings
and accessories and even delivered them to us! When we couldn't find
Steve on our first break, we asked Heather, who sent Steve to get their
new shower walls out of the rain. (Wouldn't want those to get wet now,
would we?) The laughter turned to tears (I guess you had to be there!)
and that turned into the joke of the evening. Aaron couldn't leave town
without getting on stage (Our rule!), so he got up and played Sweet Home
Alabama with Walt, and did a fine job. Good luck Aaron & Barb!
An earlier start made it feel a little
strange at Oasis on Thursday, but the crowd picked up early too. John
had warned us about being too loud, and we made a conscience effort to
do that, but obviously John wanted to remind us, often.
We played a few, then took requests
which brought us to doing a "new," okay, a different Van Morrison song,
Tupelo Honey, which D.R did a bang up job on, despite annoying guitar
problems. Well, it only made sense that Danny's guitar would mess up; he
bought a brand new bass amp that sounded great, and is smaller and
easier to carry up the Oasis stairs to boot. Murphy's Law strikes again!
Everything was back to normal working function by the second set. We saw
our faithful posse of regulars, Air Tran John, Brad, Fed Ex Jack, Mark
from LaStrada, Cherie and Jennifer. Gail & Jorge came in to show their
support, too. Chuck & Anne came by, as did Patty & Karen. We saw a
couple from Michigan, who had seen Dave & Walt at Creekside on
Wednesday, who said they had no idea we would be there, but stayed
almost all night and even danced to a few songs. Remember we start at 7
pm from here out so come early and get a seat.
Friday at Papagallo's was a blast, even
though the crowd was a little off. We did see John and Joanne, and Karen
and Patty. Bert made a quick appearance, and Jeanster managed to stay
for a while. We'll be back here on the 22nd. and we'd love to see a
bigger crowd. This is one of the nicer rooms to play in St. Augustine,
and smoking is allowed. Linda and her staff are great, so come on out
and support this great venue.
Saturday was supposed to be an "off"
night, but we got a call from Dave's 1/2 brother, Eddie, (Wharf Ratz)
who need someone to cover a gig at the ultra-plush Sea Island Beach Club
on Sea Island GA. The rain kept the crowd down, but we managed to make
some new fans, including a nice family from Indiana, who danced a bunch,
and a great performer named Zak Morgan who had just finished an 8 week
run there, playing for the kids. Zak got up to sing Cat Steven's "Father
& Son" and sounded great. The bartenders and staff made us feel at home,
and we had the chance to see how the other half lives. Leaving St.
Simons, we got a little lost. On our 45 minute tour, we saw all the
sights you could see in the dark and finally made our way off the
island. Despite the detour, we managed to get to Jacksonville just in
time to talk to our friend Gregg (Mr. Natural) at the former Café on the
Square. The manager remembered us, and seemed impressed with our
impromptu version of "Don't Ever Let it Get You Down", who knows? Maybe
we'll get a gig there!
The Sunset Grille was great as usual.
Buzzy Meekins had a 51st birthday. We had a couple of laughs with Mike
the owner and it was a good day. Requests were as varied as Elvis, Glen
Campbell, the Bee Gees, and Delbert McClinton all getting everyone into
it. We saw the Harvey Brothers, Gary & Loretta Ruff, John & Joanne,
AirTran John, the Bar None Bunch, Linda Warren and Warren's son, and Ed
Lutinski. Afterward we made our way down to Creekside to see The
Driftwoods, who sounded great. Definitely check them out if you get the
chance.
I hope everyone read the article about
the
Summer Music By the Sea concerts; Peter Guinta did a great job
writing this story of a wonderful event, and said some pretty nice words
about us, too. Thanks Peter! You'll find the article in Saturday's St.
Augustine Record.
This week, we'll play Creekside on
Wednesday at 6pm, then three nights at Oasis starting at 7pm, and
finally Sunset Grille on Sunday from 4-8pm.
Late July ~ Early August,
2003
This newsletter will be a little dated to start. We have been very
busy, and between all the traveling, and an
occasional "double", you have to expect this! We would be open to any
help in this matter. Anyone
wishing to apply for newsletter writer will need to know the following
job description:
- You must follow around the band to
every gig and studio session, yet never be in the way, or become part of
the story.
- There is no pay, and you may be asked
to contribute to our tabs after every gig.
- Your story will be scrutinized, and
even checked for accuracy (at our discretion)
Wednesday 7/23: With Dave in
Virginia, Walt & Danny played Papagallo's after finally getting all the
electrical gremlins sorted out. It turned out to be a slow night,
probably because our name wasn't on the sign, and there was a concert
next door at the pier. But true professionals don't let little things
like this get in the way, so the boys played on. We saw some musician
friends, including Frankie D, Buzzy Meekins, and Jody Stratton. We also
met Frank from Amazing Music, who is putting on the Jacksonville
International Guitar Show on September 19th through 21st at Jacksonville
Fairgrounds. Frank even asked Danny & Walt to come up and perform, but
other obligations won't permit that. We will attend, though, and would
love to see our guitar playing friends there! There will be a fine
line-up of performers, and you can check out their schedule at:
www.amazing-music.com We'd also like to thank Barb & Aaron for
showing up at this gig.
Thursday 7/24: Oasis weekend
usually starts with a blow out on Thursday, and this week was no
exception. We saw Hoagy & Susy (and her new Jaguar), A/T John, Missy &
Jack, Cherie & Jennifer, Tim & Sally, Jim & Jack Nicks, Jim & Jimmy
Smith, along with Nicole and her Dad, Chuck & Anne, Don & Gina, Karen &
Patty, and even Stefan all showed up to support us. We started a record
week, bar tab wise; more on this later.......
Friday 7/25: The Christmas in
July Party was an unqualified success. This is our 5th time playing this
event, and we have the shirts to prove it! Other than Woody's foot
acting up, the night was flawless. Our tab was astronomical, and we sold
a bunch of our new ladies tank tops.
Saturday 7/26: We were to play
the Summer Sizzler for the Chamber of Commerce at 5:30pm, although we
had been listed at 4:30 in the local paper. So, we started at 5! Woody's
foot would not allow him to stand up for any length of time, so he was
excused, and we played as a trio. The hot evening air was cooled by a
great breeze off the ocean. We had a wonderful group of people, some
fans, some hearing us for the first time, but everyone seemed to get
into our music. We did some originals, which went over well, and some
requests that always turn strangers into friends. We'd like to thank
Linda Abbott for asking us to play, and Ed Trestler for his help in
coordinating everything. We saw Joanne B. and her girls, who danced and
played in front of us with some other youngsters including Walt's neices
and nephew. Carla & Kevin, Jim & Anne, Kyle & Tina, Tom, Judith and
friends, and John all showed up to support us and Betty Griffin House
who benefited from the day's events.
Later that evening: We were
really surprised to see a few faces follow us to Oasis after the
"Sizzler", and Woody joined us to offer those fans a different show than
they had just seen. We had another stellar evening, and our total tab
for the weekend was almost $300! Stop the Madness, indeed!
Sunday 7/27: Sunset Grille
Sunday. We know we were there, but honestly can't remember too much from
this gig!
Wed. 7/30: We had a beautiful
evening at Creekside. The food there is always delicious and the staff
is just great. We saw Duff, Jeanster, Hoagy & Susy, John, Joe, and
others. It was great to have Terri back behind the bar, and everyone got
a kick out of her special way of serving us shots; that is, poured on
stage. We always have a good time here, and are looking forward to
playing the next three Wednesdays, August 6th, 13th and 20th.
Thu. 7/31: This will be our last
8pm start at Oasis for a while. Beginning in August, we'll start at 7pm.
We tried to take it easy, because we had an early start and a long drive
the next day. We did get smart and bring our own bottle, but we barely
made a dent in it. Total tab: Under $20 (Hoo-ray!)
Friday & Saturday, 8/1 & 8/2: We
hit the road early, gassed up, bought the necessary junk food, sodas and
reading materials for our 6 hour drive to a new bar, Motorheads in
McDonough Georgia. It was pretty much an uneventful ride, with the
exception of a long wait for burgers in Ashburn, GA. We had met the
owner, Harry, many times during Bike Week and Biketoberfest events, but
didn't know quite what to expect. Boy, were we surprised! Harry has a
beautiful place. There's gorgeous motorcycles hanging from the ceiling
and by the front door, pool tables, a big bar and plenty of seats. But
what made it for us was a real, honest-to-goodness stage! Our friend,
Jim Lamb, who helped put this together, met us as we loaded in. Jim &
his lovely wife Mac had invited us to spend the weekend with them,
despite many warnings! Jim took us by the local music store to buy a
connector and some strings, drum accessories, etc we needed, and he even
lent us a power amp so we could hook up the club's subwoofers to
compliment our PA system. We drove over to their house, showered and got
back in time to try some of Motorhead's food. We also got to meet some
of the staff, who were really nice to us. The food was great, as was the
service, all that was missing was the music, which we were all to happy
to provide. We had the crowd going almost immediately, thanks to our
many friends from the Atlanta area who came out to show their support.
Jim & Jack Nicks brought their friend, Dave. Matt & Lara brought a
friend, too. Mike and Eddie, who along with Jim Lamb, were in the "Lone
Walter Band" together, brought some friends. The entire Lamb family
(well, almost) came out and danced the entire last set. It took the
bartender, Guy, no time to get what the "Tequila" song meant, and the
shots started to flow. Guy even agreed to let us continue to use his
name! Harry told us that Saturday night, every time we played Tequila,
he would buy the house a round! (We would check back with him after we
discussed the possible expense of this offer!). Anyway, we headed back
to Chez Lamb for some after-show partying, crashed out, and woke up to
the smell of food! Whoa! (hint: If you ever want to wake up this band
fast, cook a good-smelling breakfast)
We ate, watched some TV, and pretty
much took it easy. Mac made us some chili and hot dogs for lunch, and
Walt spent some time in the hot tub. We knew we need the rest, because
we wouldn't be horizontal again until Sunday morning, and then only for
a short rest before we had to be at the Sunset Grille. Anywho, we headed
back to Motorheads, had another great meal, and were surprised to see a
bunch of the people from Friday night had come back, including Jim &
Jack who brought their wives this time. We were REALLY surprised to see
Dee & Dave from Tifton GA, who we'd called on the way up, but didn't
think we'd see. We worked out a plan on the free tequila shots; we would
only play the song once (we did have to take it easy since we were
hitting the road afterwards), but, true to his word, Harry brought out a
case of Cuervo, and 3 trays full of shot glasses which were filled and
passed out to anyone who wanted one! I guess Harry liked our show, since
he invited us back the first weekend in October, and there was talk of a
once-a-month schedule starting next year! Harry introduced us to a lot
of the locals, and then asked if we'd like to play at the All-Harley
Drag Races in April. After the
night was over, we packed up, said our good-byes and hit the road for a
long trip south on I-75. We loaded up with gas, food etc. and were on
the road by 1:45am, which takes us to........
Sunday 8/3: This would be a long
day. We made good time coming back (at the expense of gas mileage), and
rolled into Florida before sun-up. We landed at the Besley/Maville
compound at 7:50am, and went our separate ways. We met back at the
Grille at 3pm, and had a pretty good day. We hardly put a dent in the
bottle that Dave & Dee had given us from their cruise to Mexico, as
shots were being bought at a pretty good clip. We saw lots of friends
including Jeanster, Tom & Judith, Bill Newmeyer, Chuck & Anne,
Jane & Bill, John, John, Jack, Jack,
Rich Harvey and our friends from Oasis, as well as Mike Moranti from
Holiday Inn, and the Bar None crew. Even Woody showed up with Karen to
grab a bite to eat. It was a nice ending to a great week!
This coming week we'll start at
Creekside on Wednesday at 6pm, then we'll start early at Oasis; from now
on we'll start at 7pm. Friday we'll return to Papagallo's at 9pm, then
Sunday we'll be back at the Grille at 4pm. There's a rumor of a gig in
St. Simons Island Saturday night, but no details were available as this
goes to print; try calling the "Hotline" at 904-471-7522 later in the
week for more details.
Also, our friend, former booking agent
and Dillion Guitar rep, Rick Perry has asked us to ask anyone who might
have pictures, video, or tape recordings of live gigs or any of the
radio interviews we've done, to send them in, as Rick has gotten back in
the "bizness" and will be doing some more booking and PR for us. You can
reach Rick @
www.BOUNCETHECAT.com or email him at
rick@bouncethecat.com.
Thanks to all those who support us
weekly by buying CDs, shirts, shots, or just BEING THERE!
See you at the gig!
Da Guys
Week of July 13,
2003
We'd like to thank all of you who came
out to celebrate our birthdays and anniversaries over the last couple
of weeks. All this celebrating often means our newsletter obligations
are often delayed, but fret not! We keep notes!
We'd also like to remind you of a few
coming events that should be fun for all our fans. We have the annual
"Christmas in July" party at Oasis on July 25th. We will play at the
Chamber of Commerce "Summer Sizzler" on Sat. July 26th at 5:30pm.
We'll also be headed off to Atlanta next week to play for our friends
and fans in that area.
Wed. 7/16: We played at Creekside
before heading over to record at our new super-secret recording spot.
We had a great meal, then played for a number of people who really
wanted to hear us, and even a table who tipped us to turn down! Money
talks, right? But it was funny to see this table singing along both
before and after their request! Thanks to Hoagy & Susy, Heather &
Terry, Duff, Jim and Joe for coming out to support us.
Thu. 7/17: Oasis was crowded as
usual, and we played request after request to keep everyone happy.
Greg Baril, Marla & Jorge showed up. Greg sat in with us, and smoked
as usual! Mary-Margaret came out to introduce her cousin Jim and his friend
Stephanie from North Carolina, and to make sure Walt didn't drink too
much while driving the Hummer. Walt took Danny for a cruise down the
beach. Hoagy & Susy, as well as Duff and AirTran John did their best
to send numerous shots to the stage as an early birthday wish for
Walt, who tried to abstain, and did pretty good. Had to save up for
Friday.....
Fri. 7/18: Scarletts had reserved
almost the entire section near the stage for Jill & Walt's friends.
Bert & Mary-Margaret, Hoagy & Susy, Tom & Judith, Jane & Bill, John &
Debbie, Terry & Heather, John, Joanne, Jeanster, Linda, Warren, Renee,
Randolph, Pete, the Creekside Crew, and the wives/girlfriends, Babs
and Karen made it a great evening for the celebrating couple. Topping
the show was Ed Pickett and John Winters who both got up to play with
the band. It was much fun. Jill & Walt would like to say "Thanks" for
the cards and gifts, and Walt would especially like to say "thanks"
for everyone who sang "Happy Birthday". The band would like to thank
Rick, Cat and Jason, Amy and the rest of the staff at Scarletts, who
asked us to plan our birthdays and anniversary at Scarletts next year!
Sat. 7/19: Back to Scarlett's for the
weekend wrap-up. We saw Duff, who was under the weather (hope you feel
better soon!) as well as Jeff & Toni, Gary & Adrienne, Jay, Jeanster
and old friends Bodie and Matt. We saw some fans from Melbourne, who
had waited for us for 4 hours to get there and start playing! We
played Norwegian Wood, and The Amazing Rhythm Aces for them. Walt
borrowed Woody's scooter for a quick trip over to White Lion to wish
our friend Jim Carrick a Happy Birthday, and saw Jim Stafford, and
former Scarletts bartender Jeff Mars.
Sun. 7/20: We made it! What a
weekend, what a month! John B. was there, as was AirTran John, Linda,
Jim & Jack Nicks and their famalies (who we'll be seeing in Atlanta
next weekend) Tom & Judith, Joe Bedouin, Rich Harvey, Hoagy & Susy,
Bert, Greg & Marla, Mary-Margaret and family, Karen & Patty and the Jeanster. We
also saw some great old friends we only get to see once in a while,
including the staff from Yesterday's in Jacksonville, and Bob & Julie.
Walt worked in the car business with Bob about 14yrs. ago, and it's
always great to see them.
Monday, the guys took a well earned
mini-vacation, but are ready to see you this week.
On Wednesday, Danny & Walt will play at Papagallo's. Thursday Dave & Woody will join them at Oasis at 8pm.
Friday is the "Christmas in July" party at Oasis (the activities,
including Santa, will start at 4:02pm. TG's start at 8pm) where
they'll be lots of give-aways and specials. Saturday, we'll play at
the Chamber of Commerce's "Summer Sizzler" at the St. Augustine Beach Pier
Pavilion. There'll be fun & games, good food and good music all day
to benefit
Betty Griffin House and TGs play one set at 5:30pm, then
they're off to Oasis at 8pm. Sunday we'll be back at the Grille from
4-8pm.

See you at the gig!
Da Guys
Week of July 6,
2003
Last Wednesday at Papagallo's we saw
John B, Jeanster, Hoagy & Susy, and Heather, Steve, Mikey and Julie.
Dave's folks, Twist & Margie came by, too. Our beloved Woody came by
with Karen, Patty and Tattoo Mike. It had been awhile since Dave &
Walt had played PapaG's and we had a real nice crowd. We met people
from GA and MD, and our friend Billy Bowers stopped by with Skip, who
we'd met a few years back. Skip is from Nashville and played in the
band "Alibi". We booked some more gigs through September, and we'll
book some more when Linda gets a new calendar! We will say that
Papagallo's is one of the only bars we play that still has smoking
allowed. Makes for an old-fashioned "smoke-filled" atmosphere you
either love or hate!
John at Oasis is looking to buy a new
calendar, too. But, he wants to book TG's in 2004! Thanks John! We saw
Duff and Linda. Duff "Duffed" us and even picked up OUR tabs! Thanks
Duff! When Duff is around, either we remember what happened.....or we
go straight to.....
Friday, we hit the road, somewhat
hazily, to Cedar Key. The whole band rode together and even brought
John along in case Jay forgot to pour shots before & after every
set! Jay did alright, but John got to deliver a few to the stage, so
thanks John for being there (again) when we needed you. Miss Linda
made a great feast that included steak, ribs, shrimp in pasta,
twice-baked potatoes, and even fried us some frog legs! We made it to
the club, and had Pete Frizell up right away. Our own wall-o-guitar,
with Danny, Dave and Walt sounded so big with Pete and Woody, we kept
doing it all night. The crowd was small, and only so mighty, so we
made the best out of it and played our ass off!
After the gig, we all went back to
Linda's to eat and sleep.
Saturday, the weather was so-so, and all
previous night's talk of going bowling kind of went out the door, and
we decided to watch "Analyze This" and "Analyze That". Then there was
much more sleeping and eating, but not until we showed the clip of
Those Guys playing at Bulow Resort from the Travel Channel's Daytona
Bike Week special. Pete copied the VHS tape to computer, modified it a
little, and we sent it off to the Webmistresses! You'll see the pic on
this week's newsletter.
Saturday night was rainy and we didn't
expect much of a crowd, but we couldn't have been more wrong. We've
never seen the dance floor packed in the first set before. There was a
great crowd reaction to the band, and we were lucky enough to have
Pete play Saturday night, too. We drank less and played more, because
we knew we had to be on the road early Sunday morning. We'll be back
to Cedar Key in October and December.
We had a pretty uneventful trip across
the state Sunday morning, and even with rain, we made pretty good
time. We made it to the Grille, and set up in the bar. Jill, Jessie
and "Robert Jones" (aka: Jacob) were there, as were Will Besley, his
son Dylan, and Dad Twist. Dylan and Robert Jones got up and played.
Meanwhile, Babs played Barbie with Jessica. Carla, Alex, and Lydia
Love all came out to see Robert play with the guys. We promise to do
Carla's request next time she comes out. Tom & Judith, The McCallum
Family, and Mary-Margaret and her nephew all made a welcomed
appearance. Duff was there, and besides keeping our glasses filled,
bought a round for the entire bar. Thanks again, Duff. We even got to
sing Happy Birthday to our good friend Randy Capo! Gave him a shirt
for a gift, too!
Don't forget to make plans to visit the
Beach Pavillion for the Chamber's Summer Sizzler on the last weekend
in July. We'll do our set on Sat. at 5:30 pm (before we head to
Oasis), but there's so much going on including food entertainment and
games, and it all benefits Betty Griffin House. Watch for lots of
coverage in the local papers.
This Wednesday we'll
be at Creekside at 6pm, Thursday at Oasis at 8pm, Friday, the party's
at Scarlett O'Haras for Walt's Birthday and The Kulwicki's
Anniversary. The band starts at 9pm, so get there early for a good
seat. We'll be back on Saturday night (including hangovers) at 9pm,
then a little rest before we do the Grille Sunday at 4pm.

Week of June 29,
2003
A few showers didn't dampen the spirit
at Creekside on Wed. the 2nd. It was Cindy David's birthday and everyone
came out to celebrate. J.D., Lisa, Beth & Don, Wendy & Robert, Randy &
Bonita, Dave & Jeanie Ray came out to party, as did John B. Jeanster,
Theresa, Brianna and her friends, Jim from JimCo, Steve & Heather, Hoagy
& Susy and Stacy Corey and Britny. Katie & Adam Womack were there as was
Adam's Mom, Ellen, and her friend Howard. We even saw Nancy L, and her
son Joey and fiancé Emily, and her folks from Fredrick MD. The
Mississippi Posse was there with Brad, Ryan and Shane.
We started the three-day Independence
Day Party at Oasis on Thursday. We tried a new version of the song
Tequila, which we re-named Jaegermeister, and the bartenders responded
accordingly. By the end of the evening, we had a firm entry in this
years "Band's Highest Tab" contest, and "Ethyl" made an early second set
appearance. Theresa, Brianna, Jessica, and Jackie came by, as did Missy,
Jack, Jim and Brad. Hoagy & Susy made their always-appreciated
appearance. The Jeanster brought our long-lost friend Kim LaMendola, who
now lives in N.C. By the end of the evening, Hoover was quite adamant
about getting everyone out the door, and Danny had resorted to slapping
Dave on the back after every song. Walt got into the act by spilling
Dave's BIG drink all over Danny's leg.
Friday afternoon, and we still hadn't
received "the call" from the Beach Zone, who had mentioned they wanted
us to play, so....we headed out to enjoy the day's festivities. Our
webmaster, Heather invited us over to have a cook-out with her beau,
Steve, his nephew Michael, and his girlfriend Julie. Steve and Heather
cooked up a feast, and Jill, Walt & the kids, and Theresa, Dave and the
girls tried to put a good sized dent in the goodies. (Used up some pool
water, too). Thanks Heather & Steve. Later, the wives/girls met up to
watch St.Augustine's downtown fireworks. Woody slept all day, and we
believe Mr.Roberts took it easy.
Friday night and we knew it would be a
little bit of a slow start. This was a good thing since Walt had pretty
much lost his voice. Hoover worked the 8am-8pm shift, but still came
back to buy us shots and request a "Hooter's" song; we played a fairly
nice version of "All You Zombies"). Barb, Aaron, Becky and Frank, Hoagy
& Susy, Missy & Jack, Brad, Chuck, Anne, Anne's sister and her husband,
Adam & Katie all made it out rather early, and got good seats. Later,
Karen, Patty & Mike, and the Mississippi Gang, Brad, Matt, Ryan and
Shane came out to down a few in preparation for the Pepsi 400 on
Saturday night.
We had a real treat when Danny's
friend, Joe Smothers came by. Joe is a talented singer and
guitar-player, who got up with the boys to do a few songs; a bluegrass
version of "Friend of the Devil" "Pink Cadillac" and a real nice version
of John Prine's "Hello in There". The crowd really liked Joe, and let
him know it, too.
Saturday, Walt took off to go to the
Pepsi 400, and da Guys invited Danny's former bandmate Wes Talton to
help out. Thanks, Wes.
Sunday in the "smoke-free" bar at the
Sunset Grille, we saw John B and Laurie. Later we saw Hoagy, Susy and
"Air Tran John" Jeanster was there as was Jack, Mace & Jeanie and
Cheyenne, and Jeanie's sister in law Cheryl got up to sing a couple
songs. Jim Sexton, guitar extraordinaire sat in with us for our last
set, and sang a few, too! Woody and Karen came by, and we saw Frank and
Linda from the Chamber, Cherie, Lou Rubino and his fiance, Judith & Tom,
Chuck & Anne, Randy & Chris, Mark & Renee and Stoney. Mark & Mimi Harvey
came by to celebrate Mimi's Birthday, and Mark showed off his new
Corvette. Rich Harvey was there too, and Mimi got a shirt, CD and the
band sung Happy Birthday for her. Rick from Scarletts bought us some
shots, as did many of the aforementioned fans. Afterward, Dave went to a
CD release party at Café 11, then to Creekside to see the Wharfratz.
Everyone else went home, at least, that's their story!
This week, we'll be
at Papagallo's on Wednesday, Oasis Thursday, then we're off to Cedar Key
and the L&M Bar to see our Gulf Coast fans. We'll be back at the Grille
Sunday from 4-8.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to
Stacy V. on 7/12,
Artimus Pyle on 7/15,
and a belated one to Georgie Rumble
(formerly w/ the Dead End Kids). |

Week of June 22,
2003
It looks like we won't be playing the
Atlantis Music Conference in Atlanta. They had such a big response
they could only accommodate so many bands, but thanks to our friends
Jim L. & Harry, we'll still be headed to Atlanta the first week in
August. Harry is opening a brand new "biker-friendly" bar in McDonough
GA called Motorheads, and has asked us to play! We'll have more
details on a future newsletter, and also on the calendar, real soon.
We'd love to see all out Atlanta friends come out and see us!
Walt had lunch with David Beigert, who
played B3 on our first CD. David lives outside of Memphis, and plays
on Beale St. every weekend. It was great to see him, and he told Walt
there's a good chance he and Becky, his lovely wife might be moving
back to the Sunshine State. Walt & Jill also had lunch with Jim Lamb
in Atlanta on Tuesday. Besides being a great friend, Jim is a former
member of a band named "Lone Walter", and his former band mate Eddie
came by to say Hi, too. It was great to see all these great musicians!
While Walt was in
Mississippi,
Danny and Dave played at Papagallo's. We had a great time and a pretty
good crowd. We met a couple from Virginia who knew a lot of the same
people Dave knew. It was a lot of fun talking about old friends.
Hopefully they will get in touch sometime.
Thursday 6/26:
Great
atmosphere, great people, great crowd!
We walked into a very crowded
Oasis, and then realized it was comprised mostly of members of the
Pharis family, who had come from all over the country to help
celebrate Della Pharis' 80th birthday. She planned on celebrating with
a tattoo! We hope to have pics here soon. We started with "Happy
Birthday" and the whole crowd joined in. Thanks for the shots, Bert &
MM. Our friends Hoagy & Susy, Tim & B.J. and Chuck & Anne were there,
too. Dave & Dennis showed up, and Babs brought some old friends from
Waycross GA. It was really awesome to see members of the Oasis staff
coming out to se us on their nights off! (How's that for a following?)
We had major PA problems with the house system, but between John,
Hoover and us, we managed to get it going. Thanks to everyone who came
out to see us.Dave's wife
Theresa, daughter Brianna and her two friends were down to help Dave
celebrate his birthday weekend.
It was great to be back at Scartlett's!
We are so glad Rick
has taken
over. He is a great person and with the help of everyone
working there has turned the place around.
We saw some great friends, including
Dave & Dee Tanner from Tifton GA and our own Jay, back from vacation.
We also saw Theresa, Jeanie Ray, Jeanster, Hope, Dave, John, Linda and
Jeff. We saw Jill's cousin Brad, Randolph Scott and many more of our
friends. Cat & Jason did a great job behind the bar and (MOD) Rick did
us right, shot & tab wise. We made a few new friends as well. And of
course, started Dave's birthday celebration with Cuervo shots at
midnight!
Saturday night, and TGs "Let the Party
Begin". Although there was some initial confusion within the staff
over exactly WHO'S birthday it really was, we soon set the record
straight. John B, Jill and Jeanie M. got there early, as did Hoagy &
Susy, Jeanster, Heather and Theresa. The big surprise of the night was
seeing our old friends Katie & Adam Womack (from Houston, but formerly
of St. Aug) who brought Katie's sister Colleen and Derek, who we
hadn't seen in a few years. Billy Bowers, guitarist extraordinaire,
stopped by on his break to say Hi. Dave & Dee Tanner came back for
night #2; and Terry & Heather Cooper brought the final draft of the
next CD's artwork (and boy, does it look good). Jay was just buzzed
enough to make a big deal out of seeing Walt's '57 Strat, not
realizing it was there on Friday, too. Steve joined Heather after a
day of turning wrenches and hammering bearings! Karen B came in to
show off her first tattoo, and brought Patty and Tattoo Mike. Rusty,
Jeff and Dennis, and Mike Evans showed up to help eat the extra BD
cake. A BIG TG "Thanks" to Rick, Amy, Jason, Amy & Michelle, and all
the waitresses for bringing Scarletts back to it's former greatness.
We can't wait to come back!
Sunday at the Grille was a continuation
of the party for the "big guy". Gary & Loretta Ruff got the shots
flowing, and we did a Glen Cambell song for them; after all it's only
been about 8 years since Gary started asking for one! Theresa, Brianna
and her girlfriends from Virginia came by, as did Curtis, Craig & Nate
from our new favorite local band "Elwood St. Johns. Dave's brother Will
brought Dave some great old photos of Dave Will and Trish, and of Dave
& Will's Mom & Dad. Jody Stratton stopped by and started a flow of
musicians including Buzzy Meekins and Mary, and Greg Baril & Marla.
Chuck & Anne, Hoagy & Susy, John, Linda, Stoney, Tattoo Mike & Patty,
and even our own Woody & Karen stopped in. The Pharis family came by
to help celebrate and also to show off Della's tattoo (Pictures to
come). We'd like to thank Mike, Pete, PT, Tony, Tom, Nina, Mo and
Melissa for taking such good care of us and all our fans!
Remember,
at the
Grille we will be set up in the bar for at least the summer. Make sure
you show up early if you want a seat.

A "Those Guys"
Happy Birthday to
Mary Jeanne B. on 7/7
and Phil Michaels on 7/9! |

This week we'll be at
Creekside at 6 on Wednesday, Oasis at 8pm on Thursday, Friday &
Saturday, and back to the Sunset Grille Sunday from 4-8pm.
Week of June 15,
2003
Wednesday, 6/18: It was a wet,
dreary evening when we pulled into Creekside's parking lot. We knew
immediately we would be inside, and hoped at least a few of our loyal
fans would brave the wet conditions to come see us. Renee the bartender
warned us that the floor was slippery and that she had already taken a
spill. We wished she would have heeded her own words, because she ended
up falling two more times! After a wonderful meal, we got ready to start
what we thought was going to be a quiet night. Amazingly, as soon as we
started playing the room filled up with fans, both old and new.
Jeanster stopped by on her way home
from work, as did Jane & Bill with Bill's daughter Kaylee (?) from Ohio.
Hoagy & Susy came by for dinner, as did another couple "all the way"
from St. Augustine South! We had 6 people come in to watch us after they
ordered! They had seen us before and came in from Illinois and Atlanta
to see and hear us. We also saw Duff, who "duffed" us once again, but we
admit to having a little head start! There were some loud golfer-types
from North Carolina who tipped us well and bought a shirt we hope they
never wear, being a girls small strap top! We saw the LaMendola's who we
haven't seen in quite a while. And we all got a laugh out of being
spotted on a Daytona Bike Week special on the Travel Channel. The
audience knew us and our music, and made it one of the best nights we've
ever had at Creekside - and we've had a lot of great nights at Creekside!!
Thursday 6/19: We went into the
studio during the afternoon and recorded some drum tracks for "Lost and
Lonely", a new song on our next CD.
Happy Birthday Jim Stafford!
Later that day, we went to Oasis, where
we saw Patricia, one of the early TG fans, who was in town for job
interviews. We started the night with her favorite song, "She Belongs to
Me" by B. Dylan and Patricia showed her appreciation with the first of
many rounds of Cuervo. Thanks, Patricia! Gregg (the owner of Oasis) was
there for a little while and told Dave we were doing a good job. He also
said sales have been up some 26% after going smoke-free in January.
Kevin and Hoover were MOD, and Walt gave Hoover an original "Hooters"
pin from the early 80s band. We had a family from Australia who were in
town to record some tracks at Eclipse, and a table full from Statesboro
GA who kept us busy with requests. Jorge, Greg Baril & Marla came by and
so did Hoagy & Susy, Chuck & Ann and B.J. & Tim, as well as Linda, Duff
& Tom, who is still celebrating his 80th birthday dancing with all the
cute girls.
Friday night at Oasis, we saw our long lost friends, Bert & Mary
Margaret. Hoagy & Susy were there, along with Chuck & Ann, Karen, Patty
& Duff. We met a couple from Eastern Texas that sent a slew of requests,
and we did as many as we could. Sherri brought her daughter Sarah and
her sister, too. A couple of ladies bought all our CDs and bought us a
round of Cuervo, too! Nice people! We even did a version of Superstition
for a special request. Greg Hart made it in and Mark from LaStrada came
by.
Saturday, Danny and Dave went fishing.
The only thing we caught was a lot of sun, but it was still nice to be
out on the water.
Saturday night was the "First
Day Of Summer Party" at Oasis, and a great time was had by all. We
started early and played late! Thank$! We had an absolute blast. Hoagy &
Susy made it by as did all our favorite fans. We DID get Duffed up and
afterward Walt went by Bert & MM's to see the race car and didn't make
it home 'till 5am but it was worth it! (He swears).
Sunday at the Grille we saw
everyone from the week before, including Denise, Duff, H&S (you know
who) as well as the ususal Sunday people, and afterward we went by
Creekside to see the Wharfratz, Eddie, Brady and Josh, who sounded
great.
We also saw Terry & Heather, and it
looks like Terry will be doing the graphics for our next CD. Thanks

Sometime in Mid-June, 2003
It's been awhile since we've been able
to say this, but it looks like we're finally back on track with our next
studio CD. We started recording TG4 in January of 2001! But because of
changes, both in band personnel and media (tape to hard disk), we have
finally found all the right bits (no pun intended) and pieces to
announce we're shooting for a release late this year! Thanks to Jim
Stafford for his patience and continued support!
Walt is proud to announce his old buddy, Rick DiFonzo, has been written
up in "Mix" magazine (Click
here to read all about it!). Rick was a major influence in
Walt's career, and has done quite well for himself, as you can tell by
the story. Also, thanks to the world wide web, Jack Kelly, who not only
got Walt in his first band in Junior High School, but was his neighbor,
too, has been emailing Walt. Seems Jack is still married to Lori (22
yrs!), and has three kids, and best of all, is still playing music! Keep
in touch, Jack.
Thanks to Jack & Cindy Mathena for letting us be a part of their
celebration of Dr. C's PHD Party. We also met some nice people at
Fratelli's Restaurant, and may be playing there in the near future.
Wednesday night, the 4th, at Creekside the weather looked threatening;
it had rained all day. We set up inside, and had a great crowd including
Jim and Doc from Jimco, Susy & Hoagy, Mike & Laurie and a nice
couple from Kentucky. It sure is a great place to play and we look
forward to playing there every time. We started a little later, so now
we'll start at 6pm and stay 'till 10.
The rains came down on last Thursday
night's Oasis gig. I guess you could say we had a captive crowd, since
no one wanted to venture out into the hurricane-like rains. This was to
our benefit, since we sold 2 sets of our CDs and some shirts, too. We
played Happy Together from the Turtles and Teach Your Children from CSN.
There were also versions of others that we didn't do enough of to say we
actually "played", but we tried to answer everyone's request.
We helped celebrate Joshua's birthday, and saw Terry, Renee and Gabe
from Creekside, and even our own Jay Maville, who had to miss Cedar Key
on the 6th and 7th to get ready for his vacation next week.
In the good news department, our friend
Lisa McP has been released from the oncology doctors with an A1
diagnosis! Yeah! Congratulations, Lisa, we love you, and couldn't be
happier for you.
We went to Cedar Key, sans Jay, but
with old friend John B who filled in for the missing light man, at least
at pouring shots of Cuervo & V-8. Good job, John! Also, Pete Frisell
came up to do a bunch of songs, including some of our own! Pete even
joined in the "late-night" philosophy discussions of Dave Walt
& Danny, though not as late as da boys. We'll be back in Cedar Key
the first second week in July.
We started the week of the 8th at The
Sunset Grille, with a special pre-vacation visit from the lovely Jill,
and Robert Jones' debut appearance with That Guy Danny Roberts.
Sorry to the folks who showed up at Papagallo's on
Wednesday. There was a miscommunication that has been resolved.
At the Oasis Thursday, we saw Hoagy & Susy and Mike, and Terry & Shirley. We met
Don, and helped celebrate his birthday. Dave had just flown in from
Virginia, and Walt barely made it after missing his flight from Memphis.
We did nothing but requests in the first set, covers AND originals.
Thanks to the staff for modeling our new Those Guys tee-shirts! You wear
them well!
We played the Salt Run Tavern for the
first time as a band on Friday night. We saw a lot of our local
fans and our old friends at this "new" venue. We saw Joe &
Dianna, John B and Joanne, Hoagy & Susy, Duff, and even Patty
"the webmistress" came up and did a few old favs (Thanks, Guys
~ I had a BLAST! ~ Patty).
Sat night, we all headed down to Cortesse's Bistro to see our old
friends in Mr. Natural, Gregg Chirico and Jim Graves along with their
new drummer, Mike. The band sounded great, and we saw many familiar
faces. Afterward, Dave made his way to see Magda Hiller, who is also
great.
Sunday at the Grille, we celebrated Tony, Kelly and Judith's birthdays
in the bar. We saw a lot of faces we haven't seen in a while, including
Melanie and Little Karen. We're back in the bar at the Grille, so keep
in mind to get there early and get a seat.
It's back to the studio this week
cutting a new tune, "Lost and Lonely" for TG4!
This week, we'll be at Creekside Wednesday at
6pm, then Oasis on Thursday & Friday at 8pm. Saturday night we'll be
playing the "First Day of Summer Party @ Oasis" at 7pm. then
back to the Grille on Sunday from 4-8pm.

Week of June 1, 2003
We started out a little slow at
Papagallo's Wednesday. It seems like everyone had the big blow-out last
weekend and decided to take a breather! We saw John B. and Linda, Aaron
and Kevin Love. Greg Baril & Marla stopped by, as did Buzzy &
Mary, and we saw old friend Rob Piazzo and his wife. We had a few hotel
guests stop by, and we met some people from Gainesville; two young
ladies from G'ville GA, and a nice couple from G'ville FLA, who danced
and bought our CDs (at the special "only couple dancing"
price). We played all originals in our first set, and only played three
covers in the second, Tequila (does that count?), City of New Orleans
and Time in a Bottle, both requests from the G'ville group. We booked a
Friday night in August, and hopefully will be doing more Wednesdays in
the future. Thanks to Linda for having us play!
Thursday at Oasis affirmed the "blow-out" theory. While it was
a little slow, body-count wise, we managed to sell almost 20 shirts!
Seems that we've finally found a marketing niche! We met a lot of new
fans, and saw Beth, Wendy & Robert, Melissa & Jason, Karen,
Patty, Mike, and Greg Hart, who was in rare form. Frank from the Chamber
was there too! We did a few new songs, including bluesy versions of
Brown-eyed Girl, and a slow version of Pride & Joy.
Tybee Island was just the opposite, crowd wise. We had a packed house
both nights, and we'd like to thank Miss Nel, Mark and everyone on the
staff at the Windrose for making us feel at home, as always (great
vegetable beef soup, Miss Nel!). Jill made the trip for her first
weekend of the summer, and the kids really liked their baby-sitter,
Elizabeth. Who'd a thought that Danny's first trip to Tybee would be a
flash back? Captain Ron, who photographed and laid out our "Smile
for the Camera" CD actually went to high school with Danny, and
they had met and hung out later in L.A. with Tom Petty's band Mudcrutch!
Walt also got to have breakfast with old family friends Judy & Jerry
Champness. Thanks to Ed and Candice for the good grub (excellent ribs,
Ed!), and to Ed, Jethro and Lynne for pouring the biggest shots of
Cuervo ever!
We met three guys who are getting ready
to ship off overseas. They will keep in touch with us through our
website. Be careful, guys! God Bless all of those who are fighting for
our way of life!
Gregg Chirico also showed up and
sounded great! We're thinking he'd do anything to make Dave feel bad.
What a great player and singer this guy is! Check
out his band Mr. Natural if you get a chance. You'll be glad you
did!
We had a great time at the Windrose.
Told a lot of stories, a few jokes, made some good music, then hopped in
the truck and said goodbye to Good 'Ol Tybee. See you guys in August!
Sunday at the Grille was another
flashback experience. Dave's brother Will Besley from the Seiners,
brought in an old couple of friends who own Okra's in Manassas,
Virginia. Buzzy Meekins made an appearance as well. This was one of our
more interesting Sundays at the Grille. We had a lot of people really
listening. What a great gig this is when that happens!
If you haven't caught Walt and Dave at
Creekside, you can do so this Wednesday, from 6 - 10 (NEW TIME,
EVERYBODY!) Great food, great people, great atmosphere - makes for a fun
time for all! Check our schedule to
find when we'll be playing there again!
This week we'll do a private party for Dr.
Mathena on Tuesday then Creekside on Wednesday (don't forget...6 - 10)
after a day in the studio. Oasis at 8pm on Thursday and off to Cedar Key
and the L&M Bar on Friday & Saturday at 10pm. The Grille will
happen at 4pm on Sunday, (come hangovers or high water, or however that
saying goes!)

Week of May 25, 2003
We start this weeks newsletter with
some sad news. Jill's uncle, L.V. Swanson died early Saturday morning of
an apparent heart attack. Also, we've learned that three more of the
Those Guys extended family have been diagnosed recently with cancer. Our
prayers go out to the Swanson and Lauer families, as well as the
families of Lisa, Big John and Joyce.
Tuesday Danny and Dave got together,
traded war stories, and got started on a writing schedule. We worked up
a couple of Danny's songs, and tried them out at the Oasis on Thursday.
Wednesday night at Creekside, we saw Jane, Andrew and Bill (thanks for
the shots, Bill). We met a lot of nice people from all over the country,
including a couple from St. Louis, and a man who grew up near Walt in
New Jersey, and another couple on a new Gold Wing from Shanendoah, VA.
Owner Judy was there with her son "Splash" who also bought us
some shots! The biggest new of the night was our fav bartender Renee got
engaged to a very lucky guy. Also, Walt played almost 11 hours, as he
did a 5 1/2 hr. session at Eclipse Recording Co. with Wisconsin-based
Christian Singer Debbie Merkyll, before playing @ Creekside. Afterward
we headed over to Papagallo's to see Greg Baril, Rusty Springfield and
our own Woody do some jammin'.
Thursday night's crowd at Oasis was very energetic. We also booked July 4th weekend at Oasis, after
another gig fell through. We got to see Buzzy Meekins and Mary, Tony
& Kerri who came w/Beth. Dave & Robert were there too.
It was a triumphant return to Scarlett O'Hara's on Friday night. We had
been regulars there for years, until recent management changed
entertainment policy. That's gone for good, and now we're back to stay!
Thanks to John A. and Rick for inviting us back. With
Rick at the helm, it was one of our best weekends ever! Keep it up,
guys...it was a real pleasure to play your room! We
saw many old friends, including Capt. Tom, Linda, John, Dennis, Hoagy
& Susy, Terry & Heather. Plus, Jill, Babs, and Karen almost made
it a clean sweep of better-halves (Theresa didn't make it until
Saturday). We also saw Rob & Cathy Peck, and Rob expressed some
interest in Dillion Guitars (gotta love a good guitar @ a good price).
We met a dancin' couple from Ann Arbor
Michigan who'd been married 29 years, and another from Lincoln, Alabama.
We played through our new cords thanks to Aaron @ Radio Shack Palm
Coast, which took care of the buzz problems from last week's newsletter.
We met Gary & Adrienne, who came with TG fan Alice. Gary even got up
and sang back-up. Walt got a big suprise at the end of the evening, when
his former neighbor, Chris walked up to the stage. Chris lived next door
to Walt in Ponte Vedra in the late 80's and early 90's, and it was a
real treat to see her and swap kid pictures and stories! Jason & Cat
did a great job behind the bar.
Saturday night we had another banner night. We saw Dave & Dee Tanner
from Tifton GA, Chip & Julie, Jeanie, Beth, Randy C. Jane &
Bill, Janis & Bill, JB & Alice, Mary & Dave from Niagra
Falls, Chuck & Anne, Hoagy & Susy, Mike & Laurie, and Stacy
Valentine. Theresa and Catherine and Babs and Karen kept the better-half
thing going. Capt. Tom made another appearance, this time with a fan
club made up of some really pretty girls (How do you do it, Captain?) We
played a few "new" songs, including "All Along the
Watchtower" , "Paint it Black" as well as our own
"Carry On" and "Flying" (complete with harmonies!).
Amy joined Jason behind the bar; the "other" Amy worked the
outside bar. Woody left the gig and went straight to his "other
job" at the City Marina. We'll bet that doesn't happen often, right
Woody? We do regret missing the Eagles Club "Blues &
Bar-B-Q" with Jim Essery on Saturday, hope all went well.
Sunday at the Grille started like it would end. The Holiday weekend
found the crew a little overwhelmed, and we didn't get to start until
4:30, and then it was in the bar area, which soon became too crowded to
play. We ended up playing two sets before they "asked us" if
we wanted to stop. We reluctantly agreed, and we apologize to all out
fans, both old and new who were very disappointed. These fans are tried
and true blue and include Matt & Lara from Hot'Lanta celebrating
their 1st anniversary, Jane & Bill, John, Bert (who's hospitality
Friday night put a hurtin' on Jill & Walt), Dr. Bill & Diana who
have some great video from the Folk Festival, Randy & Chris, Beth,
Jeanie, Heather and two couples from Melbourne all came out to have fun
with the Guys. Jill, Theresa and Catherine had the special
"butt-crack" seats behind the band! We played "Have I
Told You Lately" for the first time (way to go DR). Dave ended up
sitting in with the Warf Ratz at Creekside after the Grille gig.
BTW: Did anyone recognize "Robert
Jones" aka Jacob Kulwicki with his Aunt Carla and cousin Alex on
page 2 of the Sunday
St. Aug Record?
In the "check it out" category, we've added a link to a story
of the song Hot Rod Lincoln on our website links
page. It's an epic story of a song that's really been around a
long time, with many different versions. ALSO, we're being included in a
local music review by music critic Rick DeYampert in the Daytona Beach
News Jounal; we'll post the review on our site as soon as we can.
Congratulations to all graduates, including our friend Cindy, er, make
that Dr. Cindy Mathena, and Karen's son Aaron, who graduated with
honors.
Thanks to all the bars and people who
come to see the band. This is the life we chose and having all of you
around us makes it all worth it!
|
Birthday wishes
include a belated birthday to former TG John McGee
(sorry Bud!), as well as upcoming BD wishes to
Carol Gambino, Kevin Love and Jay Maville. |
This week,
we'll see some of you at the Neville Bros. show at Freebird Cafe on
Tuesday. Then back to Papagallo's for Wednesday night, Oasis on
Thursday, then we head up to Tybee Island Ga to the Windrose Cafe, then
back to Sunset Grille on Sunday. We'll also be at Eclipse Studio on
Thursday to continue work on the next CD.

Week of May 18, 2003
It was nice to have Wednesday night
off, and anyone who was looking for a Those Guys "fix" might
have seen Woody play with Greg Baril and Dusty at Papagallo's!
Thursday night at Oasis, we saw Sally & Tim, Duff and a bunch more
of our "regulars". (Duffed again!) We also met a nice couple
from Annapolis MD, and Eddie and his friends from Ft. Walton Beach. We
brought our new shirts and managed to sell almost all of our new
"ladies" style shirts. The Oasis girls sure made our shirts
look good, as did Suzanne who came down from the big "J"
(that's Jacksonville for all you our-of-towners) with the great Gregg
Chirico, of Mr. Natural, who sat in on 3 songs.
Friday night @ Papagallo's, started
with bass rig buzz and a broken guitar string! Fortunately, this led us
to two conclusions: we needed to buy new cords, and Walt's new Dillion
"Strat" sounds great! Combined with Woody's new drum mics, and
considering that Woody pulled something in his back during set-up, the
band played better than ever. We saw DJ Chip, Jane & Bill and Jessie
Flowers from Live Oak (who duffed us!). We almost didn't remember Jessie
at first, but after he brought multiple rounds of Cuervo to the stage,
as he did when we last saw him, well...the "Guys" eyesight was
a little blurred!! Jessie is a Viet Nam Vet, and his business card reads
as colorful as his personality; "Author, Lecturer, Traveler and
Bum"! We hope to see him again real soon. Thanks again Jessie!
Sunday, Danny actually turned down the first round of Cuervos! So Dave
& Walt being the "Inquiring Minds want to know" sort that
they are, found out that Danny went over to Woody's after the PapaG's
gig, and might not have gotten home 'till sunrise! (I knew this guy was
TG material! wk) And isn''t it grand that a pulled back muscle didn't
deter Woody from being the ultimate diplomat! All seriousness aside, at
least we had Saturday night off! We saw the lovely Nicole and her beau
Jimmy, John Bruehert, Walt the insurance guy, Cat & Dave, Heather & Steve,
Judith & Tom, Chris & Randy, and Chris "Bellmawr", who
brought a bevy of lovely ladies who actually had two "Hoagies"
from N.J. for Walt! Tanks, Man, You da best! One of the girls was even
from Walt's old neighborhood! Maybe Walt knew her parents! (Ouch!) We'd
like to thank Jane & Bill, who brought a large crowd that included
daughter Sarah and Grandson Andrew. Thanks, Andrew for not hating us for
calling you "Anthony" in the last newsletter, and thanks Sarah
for not bringing Bob in to kick out butts for calling him
"Tom". We celebrated a few birthdays, including the lovely
bartender "Melissa", and Jane & Bill's friend "Billy
with the '62 Vette", and Aja.
After what seemed to be our shortest gig at the Grille, we headed to the
Fraternal Order of Eagles to play a benefit set for our new friends in
local band Elwood St. Johns.
Garry Moore's (lead guitarist in E.S.J.)
Mother was brutally murdered recently and the local community came
together to show love & support to Garry and his sister. Although
we've played a few gigs together in the past, we'd never had the
opportunity to hear them play more than one song. Folks, this band kicks
butt. The oldest member is 26, but they play all your classic rock tunes
like vets! They graciously turned their equipment over to us to play our
set, and everyone seemed to have a good time. Lisa Mack was there, along
with Gary Ek who'd just finished a long weekend at the Crawfish Festival
downtown. We also saw our own beloved Jay, along with Dave Simms (who's
"Fireman" secret is safe with us!) and Heather & Steve,
Jim, Henry, and all our "fellow" Eagles. We even got Woody
signed up!
In other news: We've sold out of the new girls shirts, but have
re-ordered more.
We've also been told that we will be included in a new book by our
friend Monte Dutton ("Rebel with a Cause" about Tony Stewart,
"Postcards from the Road: NASCAR's 2002 Season", as well as
motorsports writer for The Gaston
Gazette, NASCAR Now!). Right now
it's still in "Proposal stage", but Monte has done many
articles about music as he follows the NASCAR circuit around the
country, including a few about us! (Check
out our Reviews page). These articles will be the foundation of
the book, but Monte plans to take some time off racing and hang out with
some bands, including yours truly! Sounds like fun to us!
Jessica Kulwicki made her multi-performance debut this past weekend,
singing at her school's "Spring Choral Festival" on Friday
night, and singing with the "Palm Coast U.M.C. Children's Choir on
Sunday. Way to go Jessie!
We'll keep you posted as plans finalize on the upcoming "Kingfish
Tournament" and The Chamber of Commerce "Summer Sizzler",
both in St. Augustine in July.
Our prayers and thought go our to Carol Gambino and Frank Hendry, both
great friends as well as fans, who are fighting the "Big C".
We love you both!
This week, we'll start at Creekside Wednesday
night @ 5:30, Thursday is the Oasis @ 8pm. Friday & Saturday
(Officially "Teacher's Night Out") we'll be at back Scarlet
O'Hara's, one of our old favorites with new manager Rick! Sunday, we'll
see ya at the Grille @ 4pm.

Week of May 11, 2003
Okay, first things first as they say.
We apologize to anyone who made the trip to the Clubhouse B&G in
Kingsland this past weekend. These "corporate" run venues are
often full of mismanagement and the proverbial "Too many cooks in
the kitchen". Anyone who made it there could see there's been a
major downsizing taken place. We wouldn't have minded if they would have
told US, and they had plenty of time to do so. Unfortunately, it looks
like the next time we see them, it'll probably be in court. Too bad, it
was a nice place...
Wednesday night at Creekside, and another Chamber of Commerce night. It
was a little slow to start but thanks to the arrival of 100 young
children by bus, the deck filled up magically! Jane & Bill brought
grandson Andrew, daughter Sarah, and friend Bob; Quince
and new friend Jenny were at the table too. Hoagy & Susy came by to
enjoy a fix of TG's before heading out of town for the weekend. What can
we say - Creekside - great food, great people that work there - a gig we
always look forward to!
Woody & Karen showed up right as we
finished, so we had to head out to party some more. Walt headed up to
Arnolds to see Lisa Mack's Open Jam, and Dave, Woody & Karen tricked
Walt by not going to the Eagles, but heading to Papagallo's to see Greg
Baril & Rusty Springfield. Walt's not fooled easily and managed to
catch up there too.
Thursday night was the perfect night at Oasis; it started a little slow,
got really crowded and happening, then settled down in time for us to
call it an early night. We saw Tim & Sally, Chuck & Anne, Dave
& Jeanie Ray, Bruce & Karen, Steve & Heather, the entire
Rosa clan, including Mom, Mike & Tony. Bill, Kerri, and many others
helped turned the Rosa table into the LOUD table. Gregg Chirico made the
scene, and sang and played a few songs with us. Jack & Missy were
there. Mary-Margaret drove by, but she did roll down the window and
wave. The Chamber of Commerce was well represented by Linda & Frank.
Even John (the manager) and his wife stopped by to have one. Hoover
dispelled claims that he wasn't really the "butt slapper" you
might have read about in the local paper. His sister was there in full
support.
Dave
would like to say sorry again for not showing up Friday to see Mr.
Natural (Gregg's band).
On Friday, Walt got a call from local
promoter/producer Steve Wrench, who had a band from Texas that needed a
guitar player and drummer to play the Mayport Bike Festival, so Walt
called Woody and they did the gig with "Southern Cross", a
biker friendly band from Houston Texas. Walt even went back Saturday to
do another show with the band. Thanks to Tim, Paula, Carl and Mondo, and
Tommy for playing drums on Saturday.
Sunday morning we went to Creekside Dinery to play a special Mother's
Day Lunch. Jill Kulwicki brought Jessica & Jacob, and Jack Cindy
& Dillon Mathena, and both moms got flowers delivered to their
table. The Roony Clan was there in full force (Four Generations!) Note:
You can play "Tequila" over and over, but it won't get you a
shot before 1pm on Sundays in St. Johns County!
Then we headed to the Grille and saw Gregg Chirico and Buzzy Meekins.
Buzzy's got a new band called "Venus and Buzzhead" with his
friend "V", and they both got up to do a song. Gregg sounded
as great as ever singing and playing "Don't Ever Let it Get You
Down" and "My Bird". We saw Bill & Jane, Sarah &
Anthony, and Tom & Judith who just got back from 3 weeks in Key
West. Bert & Mary-Margaret brought Bill "The 914 Guy". And
Linda brought her Mom, who we don't see enough of lately.
This week, we'll be taking it a little easier
on ourselves and start the week at Oasis on Thursday @ 8pm, Papagallo's
@ 9pm on Friday, and Sunset Grille @ 4 on Sunday. Then we'll head over
to the Fraternal Order of Eagles to play 1 set @ 9pm. This is a benefit
for Garry from local band "Elwood St. James" and his sister.

Week of May 4, 2003
We'd like
to wish Carol Kulwicki a Those Guys "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" this
week!
Wednesday night at Creekside, we
thought no one would ever sit at the tables closest to us! We saw Jane,
Bill, Sara and Andrew. It felt like old times with Renee behind the bar
and Sloan as MOD, and Amanda back waitressing. Barb & Aaron stopped
by to celebrate their anniversary, and to tell us they're thinking about
moving to NW FL :( and opening up a bar ;)! We also saw Jeanie, Heather
& Steve. Rocky the raccoon made an appearance, and managed to get a
few scraps tossed to him up on the roof.
Thursday we enjoyed some much needed
rest on our night off.
Friday night, we set up at Oasis, then
hauled butt to Randy Scott's 50th Birthday party at the Milltop. We saw
Johnny D, and Super Dave & Rebecca there, but had to head back to
the gig. The place was as packed as it could be. So packed that we
almost got into to it with some ignorant dancers who wouldn't move back,
and kept hitting our mic stands. Somehow they got the message (after
Danny's bloody lip) after we applied a little "foot power" to
their backsides. On a brighter note, we saw our old friend Duff, who's
back in town for an extended stay. Duff is a great friend, however this
is a mixed blessing, as we always manage to get a good buzz going when
he's around! Duffed again! Thanks for paying the tab, buddy! We'll a)
make it up to you, b) get even c) do it again real soon! Love ya, man!
We also saw our fellow Brother Eagles, Henry & Rich. Do we have
great fans or what?
Saturday morning, we hit the Bean Creek Stage (aka: the hottest, crooked
stage) at the Gamble Rogers Folk Festival. The crowd was wonderful
despite conditions, and Bill & Dianna got some great video. The
sound system and soundman did a spectacular job of making the best out
of our sometimes "bouncy" sounds. We also had a great intro
from Dave Dowling; thanks Dave. Daryl Wise stopped on his way to his
gig, and now we hope we'll see him the next time we're on Tybee Island.
We only had a second to say HI to our friends, Lisa McPhillips & Jim
Stafford who were busy doing sound at other stages.
That evening, we were back at Oasis. Greg Baril stopped by to play a few
songs, and drink a few drinks. We saw Hoagy & Susy, Chuck &
Anne, Beth & Jeff, along with Dennis & Bob. Jim Stafford stopped
by with Suzy, an old friend from Jim's & Dave's past in Virginia,
who was in town to give Jim some help with his Festival obligations. We
met a nice couple from Atlanta, who came back after seeing us Friday
night. Steven & Susan have been married 20 yrs. and have 6 kids. Let
me tell you, these two acted like teenagers and didn't look much older!
We hope to see them again in August when we play the Atlantis Music Conference in Atlanta. Sherry and Harley from
Vertigo made a quick appearance, and we helped Lisa (from N.J.)
celebrate her birthday.
We started early at the Grille Sunday, so we could take a long break and
go play a set at the Festival. When we got there, who else but our old
friends the Jalapeno Bros, Steve & Will, were playing. They sounded
as great as ever, even through they were both fighting the flu. We had a
really nice crowd, and a solid stage! We must have sounded good, because
the sound guys asked us to play more! (We were the last act on that
stage after a long weekend!) We even sold some CD's and got more great
pics and video.
We headed back to the Grille, with Greg Baril in tow as official
"Guitar tech" (That's how musicians get into other musicians'
shows) and soon the place was full of great players. You've gotta love
the Grille! Nice people, nice weather, good times! Our dear friend Pat
Murphy got up to do some serious playing, and then, G.B and our newest
jam friend, Dusty Springfield got up and "smoked some blues".
We love jams at the Grille - everyone's on the same page. We saw former
Jax D.J. Rick Tracy, and his better half, Liz. We'd like to thank the
Grille for supporting us and our habits for so long.
We'll be back in the studio this week,
making another push to get our next CD out.
This Wednesay, we'll be at Creekside @ 5:30,
Thursday @ Oasis @ 8pm. PLEASE CALL
for info on Fri. and Sat. nites' gigs, as the Clubhouse Bar & Grille
in Kingsalnd GA is not returning our calls as of press time. Sunday,
we'll do a special Mother's Day Luncheon at Creekside at noon, then head
to the Grille for our usual 4-8.
Have a great week!

Week of April 27, 2003
Wednesday night at Papagallo's started
a little slow. D.J. Chip stopped by, as did Jane & Bill, who brought
a new friend, Quince. We must have made an impression on him, because he
wrote us a nice note on our "forum" (check it
out!). We also
saw Susy and Hoagy, who always are there when we need them. Theresa,
Val, Charlotte and Jeanie also stopped by. We met a nice couple from
Jasper GA, and a trio from Oklahoma. Dave would like to thank DJ Chip
for taking one for the team - you're my hero.
Unfortunately, we won't be playing Papagallo's on Wednesday any more. We
will still be playing occasional Friday nights, there, we're happy to
say! Hope to see you all there!
Thursday at Oasis, we met Paul & his wife from Maine, who bought all
five of our CDs. Greg & Lisa brought our old friend Steve. Theresa
& Brianna were there, along with Hoagy & Susy, Linda &
Warren, Jeanie, Robert, and a bunch of our local fans. Bill & Jane
were there with Jane's boss, Judy to help celebrate Judy's birthday. It
was also Annie's birthday. We met a girl from Vail, CO who loved to
dance. We also played a couple of songs we'd never played before; Black
Magic Woman by Santana, and I'd love to Change the World by Ten Years
After. We also saw Beth (still celebrating her birthday!) and Stacy
Valentine. A "Those Guys first" happened Thursday night - in
all the years we've been together, Walt has started the song tequila.
Well that all changed Thursday night. Danny started the song on bass.
Unbelievable. This would also be the first night of Danny's alter ego,
"Ethel Durante." More about this to come....
Friday night we played Papagallo's to a small but rather vocal crowd.
Walt saw his old friends Diane & Steve Chisholm. Steve was one of
the first people Walt met when he moved to Florida in the late 80s, and
it had been 7 years since they saw each other. Diane also shares the
same birthday with Walt, and Brianna, too. John B. was there with his
sister-in-law Joanne, from N.Y. who just bought a house in St.
Augustine. Welcome to the neighborhood, Joanne!
We also saw Jeanie, Jim from
JimCo and Paul. We were surprised to see our old friends Dee & Dave
Tanner from Tifton GA, but what's new there? They've been surprising us
by showing up at our gigs for years, and it's always a pleasure to see
and talk with them. By the end of the night, "Ethel" had come
out onstage again, and there were more witnesses. We'll keep you abreast
of any further sightings.....
Saturday afternoon at the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Oyster Roast was
a blast. Jill, Beth and Theresa and Brianna all came out; Dave & Dee
were there too. We all enjoyed the $5.00 buckets of oysters, and our
special guest, Pat Murphy said the Minorcan Chowder was great. Pat's
been a friend of Those Guys since the beginning, but this was the first
time we'd ever played a gig together. Dave & Walt kinda led off the
2nd set, but Pat ran the show in the 3rd and boy did we jam! How about a
blues version of Folsom Prison Blues? We did songs from Taj Mahal,
Little Feat and many more. It was one of those gigs you wished was
recorded! Pat is being "officially" inducted into the Eagles
this week, in the same ceremony as Dave & Walt, maybe we'll get a
chance to do this again. (BTW: No "Ethel Durante" sightings).
Saturday night, you may have seen Dave
around town. He sang a song with Mike Howard at O.C. White's and also
sat in with the Wharfratz at A1A Ale Works.
Sunday morning, we started out the day at the EPIC Celebration of Spring
Festival at the downtown events field. There was good food and great
plant vendors on hand, along with a "Chamber" weather day.
Thanks to Randy & Bonita, Jane & Bill, and Linda & John for
coming out to see us. Thanks to Linda & John for helping Dave
remember the words to "Dance with Me". And Dave would like to
thank Walt for holding down the fort while he came unglued. We always
love doing local festivals, especially when Lisa Mack is involved. She
runs a tight ship; always a great sounding PA/monitors/stage set-up, and
she is a great supporter of local music. Thanks again Lisa!
Later that afternoon we were joined by Danny at the Grille. We saw Eddie
and Scott from the Wharfratz, St. Augustine's "other" favorite
local band. They'd played A1A that weekend and were headed to Creekside
to do a gig before headin' back to Georgia. Jane & Bill, and John
& Linda, showed up there too. (Do we have some great fans, or what?)
We were visited by Rusty Springfield, a great bass player that has just
moved into the area. We met Steven Walt, who along with others we won't
name (You know who you are) bought enough Cuervo shots to bring
"Ethel Durante" out of Danny for all the Grille to see! But it
wasn't before Danny Roberts proved his worth with real cool versions of
Buffets "Volacano" and "Sunny Afternoon" by the
Kinks. Well done, New Guy!
Okay, this week, we're at Creekside on
Wednesday @ 5:30. The Oasis will be closed Thursday, but we'll be there
Friday night @ 8pm. Saturday at Noon, we'll be on the Dean Creek Stage
at the Gamble Rogers Folk Festival. This is a fun event, folks. You
should really check it out! We'll start back at Oasis at 8pm. Sunday
we'll split the Grille gig, because we're playing at 4:30 on the Florida
Stage at the Gamble Rogers Folk Festival. That means we'll probably
start a little earlier at the Grille, and maybe play a little later
(Thanks, Mike & Pete).

We'd also like
to wish Kerri Pyle, Randolph Scott and Alex Love
a Those Guys "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" this week! |
Have a great week!

Week of April 20, 2003
It was a great night under the trees at
Creekside. We had a couple of birthdays, including John from Macon GA
and his friends. We also saw Greg & Lisa and John B. The deck was
full of music loving people, and that makes our job all the better. We
had a visitor from Columbus Ohio, named Kate, who was in town with her
family. Kate asked if she could play and sing, and boy, could she! She
ended up playing through our entire break! Thanks, Kate.
The 1st St. Augustine Beach Civic Assn.'s "Music By the Sea"
concert went well despite the chilly breeze off the ocean. We were a
little concerned at first, as there wasn't anyone there when we got
there to set up. Eventually though, the Pavilion filled with people of
every type, and everyone seemed to enjoy the show. We can't wait to play
another of these events. Thanks to Bob & Andrea Samuels for inviting
us!
Friday and Saturday we headed west, to
beautiful Cedar Key. This was Danny's first time here, and although he
only saw the bar, the house and the road in and out of town, we think he
had a good time. Better check his "Dear Diary" column to be
sure. Friday we saw Aaron Barb & Gary from Palm Coast, and John B.
from St. Aug. (No searching for a liquor store in C.K., huh John?).
Saturday we saw Terry and friends who flew over from Flagler County.
Pretty cool, huh? Thanks to Ms. Linda, Ms. Jahn and Monika for making us
feel welcome. Ms. Linda, you outdid yourself again ~ the food was great!
Pete, thanks for sitting in ~ you smoked!
The band got a couple of new ideas
down, got plenty of sleep, watched plenty of basketball and told plenty
of tall tales. You've gotta love road trips!
Sunday, we started a little early at the Grille, because of the Easter
holiday. Although this makes it a short morning after driving across the
state, we managed to have a great time in the bar. Dave's wife Theresa
and daughter Brianna were down for the holiday. Babbs stopped by. We
also saw Denny and Sharon, Richie H., and even John B. drove back from
Cedar Key to see us (Thanks, for always being a loyal fan, and for the
shots). We saw Gregg Chirico and Suzanne, along with guitar great Jim
Graves. Gregg and Jim, both of Mr. Natural fame, both got up to finish
out our last set. BTW: Gregggg has agreed to help spell-check this
newsletter; we'll try to do better. i.e. no more Greg Chrico!
This week, we play Papagallo's on Wednesday
night at 8, Oasis on Thursday @ 8, and then back to Papagallo's for
Friday night's 9pm show. Saturday, Dave & Walt will join special
guest Pat Murphy at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Oyster Roast from
3-7pm, then Sunday, Dave & Walt will do 1 set at the Celebration of
Spring Festival at the Downtown Events Field at 1:15pm then head over to
the Grille to join D.R. for our regular Sunday Show.
|
We also want to
say Happy Birthday to:
Ed S. on Tybee
(Monday)
Beth (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday &
Sunday)
Eddie (Wednesday)
Rich Harris (Friday)
Hannah Lauer (Saturday)
and finally Sawyer Perry on Sunday!
(Please feel free
to buy shots for us this week
as we've bought a lot of presents!) |
In closing, it's great to have good
friends. It makes everything alright!
See you down the road.

We want to send our condolences to Greg Chricio and his friends on the
loss of their good friend Bill Waldrip, who passed away Monday. We're so
glad we got to play "Smile for the Camera" for him on Sunday.
Wednesday night we returned to
Papagallo's for our 2nd and 4th Wednesday gigs. The night started a
little slow. Being the pros we are, we started our show feeling
like one of our songs "It's a Great Life If'n You Don't
Weaken". Fortunately, we weren't alone for long. It turned out to
be a fun night. Guess that goes to show you ~ don't ever give up. Thanks
to Kevin & Jim for sticking it out, and of course to Linda, the
bartender, for taking such good care of us. We saw John B, David White
and Tom, Debbie and her two girlfriends from Jax, helping to celebrate
Debbie's birthday. We also saw our old friend Frank, who now lives in
Texas, who was in town to celebrate HIS birthday with friends Jessie and
Harvey, who cooks at a place in South Padre Island. (Hint: We'd sure
like to play at the Wahoo Saloon!). We also played requests for two
couples, one from Sacramento CA and the other from Indiana. Finally, Jim
from JimCo almost put us over the top with the biggest shots of Cuervo
ever!
Thursday at Oasis we were visited by Dave's Dad and Margie. There was
the
usual packed house. What a great crowd! A couple from Michigan came down
and picked up our live CD (Live at the L&M) to add to their
collection of Those Guys CD's. Gotta love that!
We saw a bunch of St. Augustine people in Kingsland GA, including John
B., Yogi, Joey, Bruce & Karen, Hoppy, Pepe (and a few more I can't
remember). Thanks for making the ride, guys! We met a nice couple
from Savannah, Michael & Kelly, who stopped by to party a little
after the show. Michael says he may have some places for us to play in
Savannah, so we can't wait to hear back from them. We got a few new
originals going while we were there, too!
The Sunset Grille was crazy we were happy to be back home. We jammed
with
Greg Chirico and Greg Baril. Later Dave and Walt sat in with the Mike
Hart
Trio. Mike plays the Those Guys tune "Love Don't Mean a
Thing".
Finally, Walt wants to thank everyone for their prayers and good wishes.
According to his doctors, you all have at least another 5 years of his
attitude! ;)
This week, Creekside on Wednesday, Thursday,
we'll play at the St. Augustine Beach Pier Pavilion for the
St. Augustine Beach Civic Association's "Music by the Sea"
festival. We'll play two sets from 7 to 9pm.
There will be food, drink and lots of activities. We head to the L
& M Bar in Cedar Key for Friday and Saturday, and Easter
Sunday are back at the Grille from 3-7pm.
Anyone looking to help us book new places to play can go to Sonicbids.com
and search Those Guys. This is an online "Electronic Press
Kit".
Be safe - see you down the road!

It was great to be back at Creekside
last Wednesday. The weather was great, as was the food. Congratulations
to Terri and Craig on the birth of their daughter. Hurry back, Terri. We
celebrated Lydia's (Walt's niece) 6th birthday with the Love's and the
Lauer's. We saw old friends from here in St. Augustine and from Ohio.
Our Ohio friends had spent a long, cold winter listening to Those Guys
on CD. They knew all the songs and picked up our new live CD. Hopefully
they will have our next CD to listen to in the upcoming winter! It's
great to have people you work for come up and thank you for being there
(thanks, Shelley)!
Danny's first night at Oasis impressed everyone, us included. We've had
some great players through the years and can honestly say we have added
yet another to the ranks! Thanks for coming aboard, Danny! Let's have a
good time - that's what it's all about! He sang everything from Led
Zeppelin to the Commodore's "Brick House". He also sang Brown
Eyed Girl. We can't wait to see what else he has up his sleeve!
Woody had a dead battery on Thursday,
but with Walt's help we were just a few minutes late.
Friday, after reading the first
installment of Danny's bio, we headed for the Oasis for gig #2. We met
some new fans from Middleburg and some from Gainesville, too. The two
families from Indianapolis were great as well. We stopped by Chris'
after the gig to listen to some music and have a couple of cocktails.
Thanks for the hospitality, Chris!
Saturday we celebrated Danny's
birthday. The place was packed! Thanks for the round of drinks, Babbs!
We got your phone, Walt, and Woody, we're not stopping by.
Sunday at the Grille was great, as always. We did some different songs
and had a drink with Pete, the owner, and saw Johnny D. Thanks for the
round, Mike!
We're back at Papagallo's this Wednesday; Oasis
this Thursday, then we're off to Kingsland GA to play the Clubhouse Bar
& Grille (912-883-CLUB). This is a big and beautiful
place with lots of flat-screen TVs and pool tables. The food is
excellent, and Doug the DJ plays when we're on break.
We've also got some things in the works that will take us to Tampa,
Atlanta and Boston, so sign up for the "newsletter
notifications" and you'll know as soon as we do!

Sometime in late March, 2003
St. Patrick's Day at the Oasis was
great! The place was packed. What a party! (Hoover, your outfit was
great.)
On the 18th we finished a mix for the
Gamble Rogers Folk Festival cd. We offered "The Ballad of John
Jackson", which will also appear on our new Those Guys cd. The song
was written by Dave and Chris. Walt, Dave and Danny Roberts (the newest
"Guy") recorded this version of the song.
Papagallo's was a lot of fun. Remember
to check our calendar for our Wednesday dates. We will be splitting them
between Creekside and Papagallo's.
We'd like to thank Hoagie and Susie for
taking care of the band at the Oasis Thursday, and thank Gail and George
for the pizza at Papagallo's. After the gig, we (Dave and Woody) stopped
by Chris' place. Mike from Dog and Pony Show was there, as well as Greg
Baril. We did a little writing...maybe something will come of our
efforts. Thanks, Chris, for putting up with us!
| Happy
Birthday to Linda from Papagallo's! |
Saturday went great at the Eagles Club.
Walt and Dave were asked to join...we just might! Can't wait to play the
oyster roast.
Sunday at the Grille was great once
again... cool jamming with Buzzy Meekins.
Thursday the 28th was great at the
Oasis. It was a rainy, nasty day, and we thought nobody would be out,
but we were wrong! The place was packed.
We had a rare Saturday off on the 29th.
Don't think any of us did anything.
Sunday, March 30th was Chris' last day
with the band, and he went out in style! He sang and played his butt
off. Notables attending include Buzzy Meekins, Rusty Springfield, and
our new member, Danny. We enjoy playing the Grille so much. We've been
playing there over 10 years, and still always look forward to the next
Sunday there!
We'll be at the
Oasis Thursday, Friday and Saturday (April 3rd - 5th), and the Sunset
Grille on Sunday!

Week of March 16, 2003
We were saddened to hear about the
passing of our good friend Bruce Lee. Bruce passed away this week
from cancer, at 46 years of age. He was a good friend and will be
missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Red and family, and the
many friends Bruce had. Bruce, we hope you find your heart of
gold. So long, Friend.
We said there would be changes in the Those Guys organization (isn't
that like military intelligence or jumbo shrimp?), and we're ready to
make some announcements. First, Chris will be leaving the band at the
end of March. His last gig will be at the Sunset Grille on March 30th.
We will surely have quite a party that day. We'll miss Chris and wish
him the best in whatever he does.
Replacing Chris will be Danny Roberts. Danny's quite a talented
musician, as anyone who's seen him play with the Dog & Pony Show
will attest. We've been working with Danny in the studio and can't wait
to start doing some gigs together.
Speaking of gigs, we are going to be going back to Scarlett O'Hara's
starting in May, and Dave & Walt will return to Creekside on the
first and third Wednesdays of the month.
That means we'll be at Papagallo's on
the 2nd & 4th Wednesday (this makes us very happy!), with an
occasional Friday gig thrown in, and Danny and Michael will do the 1st
& 3rd Wednesdays at PapaG's. Confusing? Maybe a little but everything
you need to know is listed in black & white on our schedule and
also on the hotline (904) 471-7522.
Walt put guitar parts on "The
Ballad of John Jackson", which will be on our new Those Guys
release, and also on a compilation CD. We will be mixing this
week.
Oasis was a blast as usual. We
were visited by the great Greg Chirico.
if you have never seen him perform you have really missed
something! Look for
"Mr.
Natural"!
Friday afternoon we were on our way to
Tybee Island. The Windrose Cafe was crazy as usual. We would like
to thank Miss Nell, Mark, and staff for treating us so well.
Dave's wife and her friend Catherine were there breaking away from their
busy schedule up north. We saw some old friends and made some new
ones. Walt, Dave & Jay witnessed the 1st annual Tybee Island
St. Patrick's Day parade.
Sunday found us at the Sunset Grille,
where Buzzy Meekins sang and played bass on a couple of songs: Wild
Horses (Stones) and Crossroads (Cream).
This week we'll be
at Papagallo's on Wednesday at 8pm, Oasis on Thursday @ 8pm, Friday back
at PapaG's at 9pm and Saturday at the Eagles Club from 8 to midnight.
We'll be at Sunset Grille on Sunday from 4-8, followed by DJ Chip @ 9.

Week of March
9, 2003
It looks like we'll be finishing out
the month at Papagallo's. We can't really predict the future, but there
probably will be some changes made on Wednesday nights; we promise to
keep you posted. Last Wednesday we saw Diana and Joe, Jeanie Ray and
Dave, Robert, Linda, John B, Tom & Judith, Maryland & Eddie,
Steve & Heather and Jim & Mac. Jim got up and played rhythym
guitar on "Magic". We also met a couple of guys from Indiana
(sorry we couldn't do Primus or Pantera!)
Thursday at Oasis, we celebrated Chris
Guy's birthday. The rainy weather kept the crowd down, but only by
a little. It seems most people who left snowy conditions at home didn't
mind a little rain. We saw our old friend, Trey, who picked up our new
CD. We met a couple of guys from Michigan who almost got lucky at the
end of the night. (Too bad her girlfriend wasn't quite as buzzed!)
Friday's gig at Golden Lion was moved from outside to in, so there
wasn't room for all three of us. We squeezed into a corner pretty well,
but the room wasn't big enough for all our friends who showed up, so our
friend Jim Lamb and Woody helped us put another speaker outside under
the deck. Viola! Everyone got to hear us, if not see us. Some may argue
that wasn't so bad ;) we celebrated Jill's birthday, and we saw a bunch
of friends, including teachers, staff and students from Indian Trails
School, plus the aforementioned Jim and Woody with their better halves.
As a matter of fact, Jim and Mac Lamb brought quite a crowd, including
our old buddy Harry, and a couple from Sturgis who own a campground and
talked about bringing us out there for the Black Hills Rally.
Mary-Margaret brought her parents who sat with Aaron and Barb. We were
surprised to see an outstanding musician friend, the Rev. Billy C. Wurtz
who stopped on his way home from his Main St. gig to grab a bite to eat.
We hope to see him at more of our gigs! Thanks to Tony and the
staff at the Lion for accommodating us and our rowdy friends.
Saturday, and the weather cooperated enough to let J.D. get his
"Fire & Ice Festival" off for its second year. The crowd
might have been off a little, but those that were there were treated to
some great food, amazing ice carving, cold beer and fine music. We'd
like to thank J.D. for having us back, we'd also like to thank Dennis
for the motorhomes, Paul for selling our CDs, DJ Chip for the
introduction and the sound and light crew for making our job easy.
For the first time in 12 years we added
a cover tune to our concert set. Those of you who were there saw a
first. We performed "Helter Skelter". After
the gig, Dave headed down to Creekside and sat in with his brother's
band, The Warf Ratz.
Sunday morning rain stopped in time for Mike and the Sunset Grille crew
to have their first annual oyster roast. Everyone seemed to enjoy the
oysters, burgers, dogs and 1/2 chickens done over the open fire. Dave
and Walt did the first set as a duo, Chris made it for the second set,
and the third set was a jam to end all jams. First we had Jim Lamb come
up and play "Magic" with us. Our favorite long hair
musician/trucker, Phil Michaels sang Aerosmith's "Seasons of
Wither". Then Greg Baril and Buzzy Meekins played some blues, and
finally, our new friend Rusty Springfield played some amazing bass. We
hope to see more of Rusty in the future. Then we all headed over to Salt
Run to watch Michael and Danny (aka the Dog and the Pony!?!) and
everyone got up and played.
Congratulations to John and Nancy, "My Bird" fan Jane's son
from Ohio, who got engaged on the beach while they were in St.
Augustine. John is a real car guy, and Walt could've talked cars with
him all day! Maybe that'll happen when they come back this summer.
This week, we'll play Papagallo's on Wednesday
at 8pm, Oasis on Thursday at 8pm, Wind Rose Cafe in Tybee Island for
their St. Patty's Day Party
on Friday and Saturday at 9:30pm, Sunset Grille on Sunday at 4pm, and
Monday, yes Monday at Oasis for their SPD party at 7pm.

Wednesday at Papagallo's we saw the
regulars; John M, Linda, John B, the semi-regulars: Aaron, Dave Sims,
Robert Thurston, Woody & Karen, and Marylyn & Eddie. We saw some
first-timers, too: Chip & John from Sunset Grille, and Walt's
brother-in-law Kevin Love.
We only have a couple Papagallo's gigs
left, although we'll still be doing some Friday's in the future.
It was a good run, and we appreciate the hospitality. Thanks, Linda, and
all the other folks at the bar. You all are great!
The wettest Bike Week in some time has
slowed the start, but not the enthusiasm of many Northern riders who
want to escape the harsh winters back home. Who wouldn't hesitate to get
a little wet when there's 2 feet of snow and freezing temperatures where
they live? We've met many new friends from Michigan and New York this
week. Don't worry, it can't stay wet all week! (Can it?!?)
Thursday at the Oasis was a nice crowd, but it didn't look like the day
before Bike Week. We started distributing Girl Scout Cookies (Jessica
thanks you!). Walt wants to thank Sally for helping match cookies with
buyer. Thanks to Sally's husband, Tim, for putting up with her helping.
And thanks to everyone who ordered cookies; Jessica came in second in
sales. (The first place winner's mom tends bar at the Palm Coast bowling
alley! Does anyone notice a pattern here?)
There were plenty of bikes at the Oasis
on Friday and Saturday!
A big Congratulations to Jessie and Mike Whitlock, who got married this
past Saturday. Jessie is Zachary McVey's mom, and we wish them all the
best.
Sunday we saw Greg Baril, who complained of a sore finger, but still got
up to jam with Walt and Buzzy Meekins, who came for yet another fun
weekend (with his better half, Mary). The smell of Girl Scout cookies
filled the air, as people picked up their orders from Walt (for Walt's
daughter Jessie, who sold over 250 boxes. Way to go, Jess!). If you
haven't picked up your cookies yet, you've still got a week or so.
Tuesday, Dave and Jay will be going to
see the boss, and Danny Roberts and Dave will be in the studio.
Wednesday, we play
Papagallo's, and Thursday at the Oasis.
We hope to see
everyone in Flagler Beach Friday, at the Golden Lion for a Those
Guys/Bike Event tradition. Tony and Carolyn put out some
great food in a beautiful location, and we consider ourselves lucky to
be asked back in the spring and fall. This time, we'll be celebrating
Jill Kulwicki's birthday, so come out and say Hi.
Saturday we'll be at the St. Augustine Events
Field, downtown, to play the 2nd Annual Fire & Ice Festival.
We take the stage at 3:15.
JD always has been one of our favorite people to work for, and he
always puts on one heck of a show. This year, besides the chili cook-off
and ice carving, he's added hot wings to the event. The host is our old
friend DJ Chip (now aka DJ Chips and Salsa!), and many of our friends
will join us to provide the music, including Greg Baril, Bill Wharton,
the Sauce Boss, and old friend Dave Hlubek, formerly of Molly Hatchet,
will bring his band The Southern Rock Allstars. Good food, good
music, good company; what's better on a Saturday in Florida?
Don't forget next
Sunday is the 1st Annual Sunset Grille Oyster Roast, from 3 p.m. 'til
close! Hope to see you there!
Be careful and look
both ways ~ it's Bike Week!

THOSE GUYS will be traveling with two
vans full this week, as GIRL SCOUT COOKIES ARE IN! See Walt to claim
your box(es) this week and next.
Get ready for Bike Week 2003! And you
won't have to go to Main Street to see us this year! We'll be playing
Thursday, Friday & Saturday @ the Oasis is St. Augustine, then the
Sunset Grille on Sunday. Next week, Papagallo's on Wednesday, Oasis on
Thursday, The Golden Lion on A1A in Flagler Beach on Friday, Saturday @
the Fire & Ice Festival (3:15pm/ 1 set), with our friends, Greg
Baril, Bill Wharton, and Dave Hlubek's new band, The Southern Rock
AllStars. Sunday, March 9th we'll finish Bike Week at the Sunset Grille.
Papagallo's crowd was a little off this
past Wednesday. Either everyone was saving up for Bike Week, the
weekend, or they were still recovering from Speed Week. We did see our
faithful friends, John B, Linda, John M, Robert, Dave, Debbie &
Rusty, along with Aaron and Gary from Palm Coast, and a surprise visit
from Jim & Mac, who had just closed on their Palm Coast property.
Jim even got up and did a couple songs with Walt; this was a welcome
break for Dave, who was a little under the weather. We also saw a
familiar face from the past, Anna Marie, who is Mary Margaret's sister
from Youngstown, Ohio. We welcome Ryan, a new bartender, who will be a
great asset to Linda (the man can pour some shots, be it Cuervo or
Jeigermeister!).
Thursday @ Oasis, we saw Corey &
Stacy Valentine, in a rare once, maybe twice a year appearance. We also
had the honor of the owner himself, Greg, who hung around long enough to
make sure we're still doing our job. We think we re-passed the audition!
Thanks Greg AND everyone at Oasis who always make us feel loved.
Cedar Key was the usual good time, with good food and lots of alcohol
consumed. We saw Gail & Poppy who brought a bunch of friends from
Melrose, Florida. They do know how to party, that's a fact. Charlotte
and Ms Linda made a fine spread for everyone, and there was hardly any
left for the cats! Thanks to Pete for making us sound so good, by
setting up the sound system, and playing and singing a couple of songs.
A big reason for the party was to celebrate Chris' time as a member of
Those Guys, as he will be leaving the band officially at the end of
March. This was his last time playing with us in Cedar Key. We (Those
Guys) will be back in April. We wish Chris a lot of luck in whichever
direction he chooses. He is very talented and we are sure he will be
successful in any thing he gets involved in. There is still time to come
on out and wish him well!
Sunday, back in St. Augustine and the
Sunset Grille, we saw Gregg Chirico, Buzzy Meekins, and old friends Tony
and Connie from "Options on The Island", a short lived
favorite of Those Guys and our fans. Theresa was there to
celebrate/recuperate from her birthday party in Cedar Key (AND St.
Augustine). Happy Birthday, Theresa! We also saw old friends Pat and
Gene, from FL/NY. We look forward to their surprise visits every year,
as not only are they great, supporting fans, they also keep us up to
date on J.J. Murphy, former drummer for Those Guys who happens to be
Pat's son. We miss ya, J.J.
Just a quick note that we'll be
celebrating Jill's (and twin brother Jim's) birthday at the Golden Lion
on Friday March 7th. The Golden Lion has the best Fish & Chips in
the States and we really enjoy playing for our Flagler Beach fans.
Walt and Danny Roberts will be in the studio this week. Dave is out of
town. Woody is probably getting some well-needed rest after a long
weekend on the road.
Keep your fingers crossed that Dave
beats the weather out of Virginia this Wednesday, and if he does we'll
see you at PapaG's!

The "St. Augustine Valentine"
release party went well. We would like to thank all of our friends for
coming down and keeping local music alive and well in St. Augustine!
We saw all the regulars (John B., Linda, John M & wife, Hoagy &
Susy, Paul & Patty, Dave & Jeanie Ray, Jim K.) plus the
semi-regulars (Doc, Tom & Judith, Bert & Mary Margaret, Beth
& Cindy, Marylyn & Eddie,) plus Henry, J.R. and others from the
Eagles Club (where we'll be doing some future gigs; check the schedule)
and many old & new friends who were treated to sets by Dave,
Walt and special guest Danny Roberts, who later joined Jim Carrick
and Jim Stafford (sans long hair, that was donated to kids with cancer.
Way to go, Jim!). Chris Mcvey got up to do a couple songs with Dave
& Walt, who later backed up Danny playing a couple of his songs. All
in all, a pretty fun evening for all. Thanks to Linda, Don &
Carol, for making it all happen.
Thanks also to Jim from Jimbo, the best damn water
softener
company in the world for the bottle of Cuervo.
The CD came out real nice, and will be
available at each artist's gigs. You can also buy it through Eclipse
Recording Studios and Music Matters.
Thursday @ Oasis, we started with a
request for Elvis from a nice couple from Boston, who gave their seats
to Dave's family when they were leaving. They also bought a CD.
Dave's folks, Twist, Margie, his Uncle Charlie and Aunt Debbie came
by to check us out, and we played a Kingston Trio song for Dave's Uncle
Charlie. We also saw Terry, Missy, Adam, Hoagy & Susy,
Jason & Melissa, Karen, Paul, Frank, Linda, Tim & Sally,
and a bunch of old & new friends. We did "Margaritaville"
for a handsome young man named Hunter, age 4, who was there with his
family, but we didn't do "Young Girl" for the
"unnamed enthusiastic requestee". Well, you try,
but you can't know every song, can ya? We also saw JD, St.
Augustine's Favorite promoter, who brought us posters for the upcoming
"Fire
& Ice Festival". We'll be there, along with our
friends, Greg Baril, Bill Wharton and old friend Dave Hlubek's new band,
The Southern Rock All Stars. The local band, Elwood St.
Johns will open the show, which will move from the
Amphitheatre to the Events Field this year. Click on the link for more
information,
Race week is a fun time to play music
in St. Augustine. What a Friday we had! We were back at Papagallo's, and
the place was packed! We were visited by Dave's family again, plus his
brother Will from The Seiners, and Dave's half-brother Ed and Scott from
the Warfratz. We did a rousing rendition of Bob Dylan's "Mighty
Quinn". Greg Baril also sat in and did a song he's writing for our
friend Ace Moreland who just passed away from cancer. Our webmistress
Heather posted, as well as Miss Nell and Mark from Tybee Island,
Georgia. Their bar, the Windrose Cafe, is another of our favorite rooms
to play. Dave and Dee from Tifton, Georgia came to see us too. Dee, your
hair looks great!
We also saw Rick & Cheryl Perry,
who brought friends from Massachusetts, and old friends Dieter and his
wife.
Dave and Jim Stafford did sound
Saturday for a H.A.W.K.E (Humane Association of Wildlife Care and
Education, Inc.) fundraiser. It was a great night of music, a
great cause, and a great way to spend a night off.
Walt didn't run sound Saturday, but
instead managed to have the best seats and pits access at the race!
Sunday was great at the Sunset Grille.
Everyone was in good spirits (because Monday was a holiday?) We were
joined by Buzzy Meekins, Greg Baril, and Greg Chirico. What a jam we
had! Mary-Margaret and Bert showed up with Friends Matt, Roger, and Greg
from Houston. Ritchie, thanks for Walt's engineer hat!
After the gig, some went to Bert and
Mary-Margaret's for a great time.
Others stopped at Charlotte's and had a wonderful dinner. Before
long, the guitar came out. Dave started writing a song, Chris and Greg
Chirico joined in, and the next thing you know, we were at Chris' studio
laying down tracks. Felt a little rough on Monday, but what the heck!
That's what holidays are for.
We'll be in the studio this week
working on Those Guys 4.
This Wednesday we'll
be at Papagallo's at 8, Thursday at Oasis at 7, then we hit the road and
head for Cedar Key, at the L & M. Hope to see you there!
We'll see you down the road.

Week
of February 9, 2003
Wednesday at Papagallo's started out
with confirming our Wednesdays and Fridays through March. We also
confirmed February 12th (next Wednesday) as the date of the next Eclipse
Studio release "St. Augustine Valentine Love Songs". This is
another compilation CD of local artists and their music. Try to stop by,
and buy a CD. We saw Linda, John M. & John B. (thanks for the
loyalty!), Robert & Wendy, Dave & Jeanie Ray, Pete, Greg &
Lisa, Beth, Cindy, Doc & Jim, Steve & Heather, Hoagy & Susy,
and met a few new folks, too. We were saddened to hear that our friend
J.R. had died just a few days before his wedding to Ronnie. Our hearts
and prayers go out to both families.
Thursday at Oasis, we saw Hoagy & Susy (talk about loyal fans!),
Mike and Laurie, and had the pleasure of seeing our favorite motorsports
scribes Monte Dutton, Jimmy Mac and Mike (must be racing season!). Chris
had a bad night, but managed to pull through the whole night. Way to go,
buddy. We also saw Karen, Patty, Paul, and a few others too numerous,
like shots of tequila, to mention!
Friday, we were back at PapaG's, only this time with the whole band, and
playing electric. We saw Hoagy, Susy, Laurie and Mike. Karen and Patty
were there, too. It was good to see Jim Stafford, of Eclipse Recording
Studios, and our Webmistress, Heather. We had a surprise visit from
Neal, drummer from the Dog & Pony Show, who broke a bass drum head
and thought Woody might be able to help him. Well. by the time they got
into the storage unit, it was well after their last set. Didja hear the
one about the drummer who.......oh, nevermind.
Saturday night, Dave sat in with the Wharfratz at Creekside.
Sunday, we started a little late. Dave must have had a good time after
the gig Saturday night, because after calling him on both his house and
cell phones, for half an hour, Walt still had to drive over to his house
and pound on the door to wake him up! When we got back to the gig, we
heard that our friend, Ace Moreland had died late Saturday night. Our
prayers go out to all his family; he will be greatly missed.
They say music is good medicine and can
lift the lowest spirits, well, it must be true, because our friends
Buzzy Meekins (Vaster Clemens, Outlaws), Greg Baril and George (The Greg
Baril Band) and Gregg Chirico (Mr. Natural) all came out to reminisce
about Ace and drown their sorrows a bit, and ended up onstage playing
their butts off. What an honor to have such talented guys want to come
out and do a bit of playing and singing. Come to think of it, what a
lucky crowd, to experience these great jams we've been having lately, in
a place with good food and service, on a Sunday afternoon. We also
helped Amanda celebrate her birthday. Thanks for the cake!
Another sad note, our hearts and prayers are with Rob Peck, who just
lost his Dad. Rob is a talented musician who played harmonica and guitar
on our first CD, and has played with some of the greats in the business.
:(
Don't forget the release party, this Wednesday
at Papagallo's. We will be selling the new Eclipse Studio compilation
CD, "St. Augustine Valentine Love Songs".
This CD will feature local artists doing their original songs of love.
The festivities begin at 8pm and there will be happy hour prices, as
well as some giveaways and performances by Those Guys (Walt and Dave ~
and rumor has it Woody may play some percussion) and (hopefully) others!
Those Guys have offered up the song "Love is a Promise" off of
our upcoming 4th CD. We were honored to have some help on this song from
Mike and Danny of the Dog and Pony Show.
The rest of the week
reads just like last week; Thursday @ Oasis, Friday at PapaGs, and
Sunday at the Grille.

Sometime in Late January, early
February, 2003
Wednesday the 22nd we helped Jeanie Ray
celebrate her birthday with Kim and Randy. We saw John M. John B, Linda,
our friends from the Eagles Club, Greg from World Golf Village, Robert,
Brian and Joe (Did Wendy actually ride Robert home?), Some dear old
friends from Panama Hattie's, a couple from western N Carolina, our
friend Jim Keanny and friends showed up separately. Linda was off sick
and we had the pleasure of Carol as our bartender.
Oasis was cold and windy. Pity the smokers!
The L&M was a hoot. It was John's 4th road trip in a row. Jill made
the trip too. Saturday we were surprised by Bert Mary-Margaret and Beth.
Much music, food and alcohol. In other words, a typical trip to Cedar
Key.
Super Bowl Sunday, we started the Grille early and ended at kick-off. So
we actually got to catch up on some long lost sleep. Thanks Pete &
Mike.
Wednesday the 29th, we welcomed Linda back to work at Papagallo's. There
was a bigger crowd there than we've seen in a while. We met some nice
folks from Michigan and some from Pittsburgh. We also saw John, John,
Linda (notice a pattern here?), thanks guys! We also saw Woody, Paul,
Frank, Greg (who left for the Gulf this past weekend. Our prayers are
with you) and Kirsten, Tom & Judith, Steve & Heather. We also
saw Connie, who we'd worked with at Panama Hattie's. Connie recently
lost her husband, John, so it was a special treat to see her and we wish
her well.
It's a great place - we hope you'll try
to make it a point to stop by. Just Dave and Walt play there on
Wednesdays. We do a lot of our own songs, unlike a lot of the gigs with
the whole band.
Keep your eyes on our schedule ~ we
will be having a Valentine's CD release, probably on February
12th. This will be another compilation CD, with some of the best
artists in St. Augustine lending their songs to the project. Stop by and
pick up your copy, and support local music. Our song will be
"Love is a Promise", from our new upcoming CD, "Those
Guys 4 ~ It's a Complicated World", which we will be back in the
studio recording this week.
Thursday we saw Greg Baril and an old
friend Rick Perry. Rick has a new web business called guitardealer.net
(check our links page), and is selling a new brand of guitar (for us,
anyway) called Dillion. These are high quality, affordable guitars that
sound great. Check out Walt's new guitar, and watch for Dave playing one
soon.
Friday, Walt played with Greg Baril at Scarlett's, and we saw lots of
Those Guys Fans, and even a couple of Those Guys (Dave & Woody).
Happy Birthday, Wooz!
Saturday, we had the night off. Sunday,
at the Grille, we had a great day (NO Hangovers!) and were joined
onstage by Robert Jones (aka Jacob Kulwicki), Greg Baril and Gregg
Chirico. We sang the "Star Spangled Banner" for those heroes
lost aboard Columbia. Walt and Jill had an impromptu family reunion,
with sister Mary Jeanne from North Carolina and in-laws Carla, Kevin,
Alex and Lydia Love who just moved back from Tennessee. Our favorite
tour bus driver Joe was there. He'd just gotten back from driving Gregg
Allman around, and stopped by to see us, and have a drink, since Mr. A
doesn't allow alcohol on the bus anymore!
This Wednesday
we'll do the usual Papagallo's on Wed. Oasis on Thursday, and back to
Papagallo's for an electric gig on Friday. Saturday, look for Walt at
the races and the rest of the guys loitering in and around St. Aug. And
we'll be back at the Grille Sunday.
Also, rumor has it that Dave Besley of Those Guys might be
stepping in with the Wharf Rats at Creekside on Saturday night!
One sad note. We lost "Mr. Ed" Williams on Thursday Jan 16th.
He was born on Christmas Day in 1930 and served in the Marines before
retiring to Cedar Key in the early 1990's. We'll miss his smile....

We'd like to
wish two people who are very special to us a
Happy Birthday this week: Chris' son Zack, and Dave's dad,
Twist!
Happy Birthday, guys! We love you! |
Wednesday we saw John B. Linda (Happy
Birthday!) John M., Johnny formerly with the Dakota band, Greg &
Lisa, Greg Baril & George, Tom & Judith, Steve, Frank, Heather,
Woody and Paul. We also saw Jim, and met his friends Marylyn and Eddie.
Walt thanks everyone who bought Girl Scout Cookies.
Thursday at Oasis we helped Bobbi and
the Grille Girls celebrate Bobbi's birthday. We also celebrated with J.B.
and Tim. We saw Kate and Kevin on TV. We also saw Greg and Marla, the
Cannon's, and met a great bunch of guys from up North.
Friday, we played a new place, The Clubhouse Bar & Grille in
Kingsland GA. The place is located in the Ramada Inn right off exit 3.
The place is big and beautiful, the employees were really nice and the
food, well, we can still say we don't play anywhere with bad food!
Although the crowds were off a little, we must have impressed the
management, who booked us there a few times through the summer! Maybe we
can bring some of our crowd with us! Thanks Gail and DJ Doug! Thanks
also to the Warf Ratz for turning us on to the gig.
Sunday at the Grille we talked about
how we enjoyed a Saturday night off and what we did. (The work you guys
did on the place looks great!) We also saw the Creekside girls helping
Renee celebrate her birthday. Johnny D was there, and the infamous DUFF
made a short appearance. We saw Sherri, Sarah, and Dan, and a bunch of
friends who always make the last day of the weekend fun.
On a sad note, we lost our dear friend
Ed from Cedar Key. Our prayers go out to his family and friends. He will
be missed.
Wednesday we are putting the finishing
touches on "Love is a Promise". Look for it on the new St.
Augustine Valentine compilation cd.
This week we're at PapaG's on Wednesday, Oasis
on Thursday, L&M Bar in Cedar Key on Friday & Saturday, and
Sunset Grille on Sunday.

Happy 2003! Hope everyone had a safe
holiday. We had a great time with all of our friends who showed up at
Papagallo's to help us ring in the New Year!
It feels great to be back to work after our post-holiday break.
We started the year on a sad note. Kenny Beeson, first elected mayor of
St. Augustine passed away on Jan. 3rd at Flagler Hospital. Besides being
a good friend of Walt & Jill, Kenny was the father of Karen B,
Woody's girlfriend and Jason K.'s grandfather. Our condolences go out to
the family of a truly great man.
We'd like to extend our best wishes to
our friend Ace Moreland, who has been stricken with lung cancer. Our
thoughts go out to you and your family, Ace.
The world of music lost a great legend
this past week - Maurice Gibb, of the Bee Gees. A tragic loss of a
tremendously talented singer and songwriter.
We started back right where we left off, at Papagallo's. We saw John B.,
John M., Jim, Linda, Hoagy & Susy, Paul & Patty, Woody &
Karen, a new friend, Bob, who knew a lot of Walt's old
"haunts" in N.J. and Pennsylvania. (Small world, huh!), and a
couple from northern New Jersey (exit 154!) who were really nice. We
talked about movies we'd seen while we were off, and it was suggested we
do a Those Guys Movie review. We'll let ya know if and when that
happens!
Thursday, we played our first
"smoke-free" gig at Oasis. It was interesting to see everyone
heading outside to light up. But for some, it was pretty cool to smell
the food and see clearly to the back of the bar! By the end of Saturday
night, we were pretty much used to all the empty seats when we went on
break. Saturday we got to celebrate Carla and Bert's birthdays, and the
Titans and Eagles wins. Attendance records were made by Hoagy & Susy,
Jeanie, and John B. We saw our old friend and Skynyrd
"historian" Kent who was in town with his family. Thanks to
all the folks from the Sunset Grille and Creekside who came to hang out
with us. Always good
to see old friends! Greg Baril showed up. Greg will be releasing his
live cd January 23rd at the Sunset Grille. Good luck, Greg!
We will be in the studio finishing up "Love is a Promise", a
song that will be on our new Those Guys CD. It will also appear on the
new love song CD being released by Eclipse Recording Studio the
beginning of February.
We'll be back to Papagallo's this Wednesday with a new start time,
8pm. Thursday we're at Oasis @ 6:30. Friday, we play a new place, The
Clubhouse Bar & Grille in Kingsland, GA (Exit 3 off I-95 next to the
Ramada), starting time is 10pm. Saturday we're off, and Sunday we're
back at the newly-remodeled Sunset Grille from 4-8pm.
We have received confirmation that the next "Fire & Ice
Festival" will be March 8th at the Amphitheatre in St. Augustine.
Those of you who made it last year will remember the great food, ice
carving and music, and we're happy to be apart of this event for the
second year. We can't tell you who the headliner is yet, but we can tell
you, it's a famous southern-rock band who we've never played with
before. If you think about us opening for .38 Special, Skynyrd, Molly
Hatchet, Georgia Satellites, Atlanta Rythym Section, APB, Little Feat,
well, by process of elimination, "can't you see" who it is?
Keep watching for the official announcement!
Lots of exciting stuff is coming up soon, but we can't talk about it
yet. Suffice it to say, we're excited about 2003! Happy New Year Indeed!
Let's all have a GREAT year. Thanks so
much for supporting Those Guys!
Da guys
